Clive Adshead, operations manager at Tidal Energy Ltd (TEL), gave an informative lecture on February 18, at the clubhouse on the tidal energy experiment due to be put into action very shortly.

As Clive pointed out, we have all had plenty of time to acquaint ourselves with the bright yellow turbine parked at the eastern end of the Royal Dockyard at Pembroke Dock; too long, in fact, as the turbine and support structure have been ready for submerging in Ramsey Sound since last October.

Particular weather and tide conditions are required for the lift-in, which it is now hoped can take place late in March.

Members were relieved to hear that the structure will be placed about 30 metres down, well below the depth of any keels even of commercial craft. However, the equipment and particularly the electrical cable bringing the power ashore will demand a definite no-anchoring zone!

The project is basically the first experiment to prove the technology and as such will not be economically viable - that will have to come from much larger arrays of turbines in the future, one of which is projected at St. David's Head.

The technology is attractive, being out-of-sight, dependable and more boat-friendly than wind turbines which are becoming a scary extra navigational danger.

Much of the detail of the various components and plans for assembly and installation was lapped up by the engineers present, whereas it was also interesting to hear about the environmental considerations which will ensure safe operation and eventual removal safeguarding sealife.

Very enjoyable for an audience of more than 30 club members. Thank you goes to Clive and TEL, and good luck with the up-coming installation!

On February 21, 'A Night at the Dogs' took place, with a good crowd gathered for a fish-and-chip supper, care of 'Mr Chips', followed by a betting extravaganza on pre-taped greyhound races, using token money.

Judith Ronowitz was the overall winner, amassing £28,000 in token money. Proceeds from the evening will go to the RNLI.
