This year’s Pembroke Farmers Club Town and Country Show, held at Lamphey Meadow, was again extraordinary in the huge number of attractions appealing to a very wide range of interests.
The weather was not as kind as it might have been but, quite philosophically as always, the committee members considered that it could always have been a lot worse!
As briefly reported last week, entries of very good quality were well up to expectations across the board in horse and pony, cattle, sheep and dog classes and the winners in each section were very worthy of their awards.
The dog section in particular drew in 63 pedigree entries and 175 in the novelty classes with one particular class seeing 22 dogs being presented before the judge. Best in show was given to Darren Allen’s Golden Retriever and the winning puppy was a Chesapeake Bay Retriever owned by Ann O’Donnell.
Stan Harden’s sheepdog trials were also a big attraction starting with the first runs in the morning session at 7.30 am with a total of 61 dogs entered, including highly-rated trialists from as far away as Sweden and Italy.
Classes in the Fur and Feather marquee, enthusiastically organised by Edward and Betty Morris, have really taken off and this year’s winning bird was an outstanding Welsummer bred by Derek Howells.
A poignant reminder of the immense contribution given to the show during his lifetime by John Russell, who sadly passed away recently, was evident when his younger daughter, Pam Tanner, at the marquee ceremony presented a shield to be awarded annually in his memory. The first winner was Rose Newton.
The task ahead for all supporters now lies in preparations for ‘the big one’ - the 2017 show will be the club’s 200th and no one needs reminding that, in the south of the county especially, nothing is done by halves. Get next year’s calendar now and put a huge ring around the first week in August!
