The Mentro Allan project in Pembroke Dock hits the ground running this month with a four-year funding bid secured.
Young people between the ages of 11 and 25 living in the Pembroke Dock area were invited to sign up to the local Go4It project yesterday (Thursday) at the Bush Street Youth Centre. Local activity providers were there to give young people a taste of what's on offer.
Following the sign-up events, the first Go4It taster sessions will take place during August 2006 with a full programme of activities to follow later in the year.
"Come along and see what is on offer," said Ben Swindlehurst from Pembrokeshire County Council's Youth Service. "We are arranging a series of taster days in August and are keen to know what sort of activities people want to do."
With its headquarters in Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority as the lead organisation for the scheme, along with a steering group of partner organisations, will appoint a project co-ordinator in time to organise and develop these sessions.
Local project manager, Saira Evans, stated: "The Go4It scheme will offer many opportunities for young people in this area to experience recreation activities in an outstanding natural environment, encouraging sustainable social and community development. I am looking forward to the appointment of the project co-ordinator to take this exciting new project forward over the next four years."
Mentro Allan and Go4It is supporting the national strategic direction outlined in 'Climbing Higher', the Welsh Assembly Government's strategy for sport and active recreation, which includes the aim of increasing activity among the sedentary population in general. There are certain sections of the population that face specific barriers to participation above and beyond those that are experienced by most people.
