Pembrokeshire-based community group, Pembroke 21c Community Centre, is celebrating receiving a 'wish list' of electrical goods up to the value of £1,000 after winning a competition put forward by not-for-profit Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling scheme, REPIC.
The popular community Centre in Pembroke, relies heavily on fundraising and grants and usually receives donated or recycled equipment. The group requested a digital camera, TV, DVD player, a projector and screen for their fundraising film nights, along with a few kettles.
Competition organiser Repic, who was widely supported by Pembrokeshire County Council, invited community groups, schools and good causes in Pembrokeshire - along with 19 other areas across the UK - to enter the competition to win new electricals. Entrants had to say what new electrical product/products they needed and answer the question 'What does WEEE stand for?'
Hundreds of entries were received for wide ranging electricals, including IT equipment, household electricals, laptops, Kindles and CD players; unusual requests included digital heart rate monitors for a school science class, DJ equipment and water coolers for a school.
Development officer, Elizabeth Gossage, said: "We do rely heavily on donations of equipment for the centre. Apart from purchasing a couple of laptops, all our IT equipment has been donated second hand. We have had funding from Big Lottery and the Welsh Government to refurbish the building, but very little for the equipment that a 21st century busy community centre needs, so the equipment we have won from the REPIC 10K competition is going to be very well appreciated and well used."
Dr. Philip Morton, CEO of REPIC, commented: "The community competition headed the next phase in our mission to raise awareness of responsible recycling. It has been fantastic to see so much engagement and we are delighted these donated new electricals will benefit the local community."
He added: "Everyone has their part to play when it comes to recycling old electricals and earlier this year we also introduced our first consumer WEEE recycling website, http://www.responsible-recycling.co.uk">www.responsible-recycling.co.uk, where people can go to for numerous tips. You can also find your nearest recycling centre by simply clicking on the 'Where Can I Recycle' tab on the website."
