Station B and the Houdini act
The Charlton A's Welsh flavoured quiz this week resulted in some very close encounters, notably at the Station Inn, where the B team hosted the Alma A, who, due to the Wales v Italy rugby international and Swans v Bradford Capital One Cup final, fielded an understrength side. However, unlike Bradford, they staged an unbelievable assault on the second-placed team in the league and after round two led by 13 points. Gradually, the home team made inroads into this lead and by the end of round five were within four points of the visitors and all rested on round six. The Station B finally took the lead, but when Carolyn took a six-pointer, it all rested on the final question, and thanks to knowing the 'McDonalds', the Station took the spoils by just two points.
The match at the Alma was even closer where the B team were nip-and-tuck with the Charlton A, with the sides never separated by more than five points, but the Alma finally coming out on top.
At the Oak, the visitors from Cosh Brewery suffered almost the same fate, conceding defeat by two points in a very competitive, high-scoring game.
At the Naval Club, another exciting match ensued, with the final outcome in favour of the home team by just four points.
While all the excitement was going on elsewhere, the league leaders, Station A, were producing the highest score of the round for the second week running, but never had it all the own way before overcoming the valiant efforts of the First & Last.
Congratulations to the Charlton B for setting the most competitive quiz for ages as the results show.
As a result of the latest round, the Station A lead with 36 points from the Station B 33, Alma B 27, Oak 24 and the Naval Club, Charlton A and Charlton B on 21.
Results for the week were: Alma B 73 Charlton A 72; First & Last 67 Station A 90; Oak 87 Cosh Brewery 85; Station B 75 Alma 73 and Naval Club 81 St. Govan's 77.
