Members of the public pinching pebbles and stones from Saundersfoot beach by the ‘bucket load’ have been challenged by a local county councillor, who has pointed out that it is not permitted.

County councillor for the seaside village’s south ward, Cllr Chris Williams said that over the past few months, whilst working on The Strand, he has noticed people trying to take stones from the beach.

“It was only two weeks ago that a gentleman pulled up in his car to proceed to the beach to fill up his bucket. He isn’t the first I’ve challenged and after I explained he apologised and left,” stated Cllr Williams.

“For those who aren’t aware I will try to explain. Very few of the stones and pebbles on the beach are local, they are a combination of ballast brought in by the coal ships loading on the beach and later in the Harbour.

“A much later addition was Quarried Stone brought in to replenish the bank after severe storms. I have been told that Arthur Parcell was instrumental in making sure Dyfed County Council provided the stone to protect the properties many years ago.

“This bank now forms an essential part of the sea defences for properties along the beach. Removal of stones and pebbles off the beach is not permitted.

“I would like to know more about this and if any residents can help, I would be grateful,” he added.
