Sir,
I wish to make an apology to Tenby Town Council with regard to my letter, published in last week's Observer headed 'Payphone Plea'.
I checked with BT several times and they insisted that Tenby Town Council was responsible for the forthcoming removal of the payphone by South Beach car park and not Pembrokeshire County Council. However, I have since made contact with the town clerk and he informs me that the first the town council knew of the removal of the payphone was when members saw my letter in the Observer. The town clerk further informed me that it was Pembrokeshire County Council whose planning department approached BT in this matter.
I understand that Tenby Town Council met today and that they were including the issue of the payphone's removal on their agenda for discussion. During the course of my discussion with the town clerk, another valid point was raised in objection to the fact that BT say they will not re-site a replacement payphone near South Beach car park; namely that this would leave the Esplanade/South Beach side of the town without a public telephone at all.
I do hope that readers who saw my letter last week will seriously consider complaining to BT via the Freefone and Reference numbers I gave, before the end of January.
Anne-Ruth Alton (Miss),
3 Islay Court,
Victoria Street,
Tenby.
