Part of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path leading to the beach at Waterwynch has had to be closed by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority because of land slippage, members of Tenby Town Council heard on Tuesday.

The Park took emergency action to close part of the path on February 10 because of a number of landslides in the area, the most recent of which has made the footpath unstable. At one point the ground underneath the path has completely fallen away.

The problem was first reported to the Park Authority by the landowner, Mr. Evans, in January, and successive landslips in recent weeks had undermined the path and the adjacent walls to the extent that Mr. Evans had now taken remedial action to remove the debris and prevent further landslides.

In a letter to the town council, the Park's access officer, Anthony Richards, explained that they would not be carrying out any further work until they had assessed the long term options for making the cliff face stable.

However, their priority was to restore public access to Waterwynch Bay without delay and as a result they had constructed a temporary alternative path bypassing the unstable area.

Town councillors noted the action taken by the Park.

"The path will be re-opened as soon as possible," added Clr. Trevor Hallett.
