The sun shone on Pembroke Dock Community School's annual 'Fun Cycle Day' held on Friday and which formed part of Pembroke Dock's mid-summer festival week.

Pembrokeshire County Councillor Huw George, cabinet member for children and young people, offered words of encouragement to all 120 riders before they set off.

Pupils from Years 3 to 6 thoroughly enjoyed their morning ride around a planned route from school along Bush Street to Commercial Row, Front Street across Meyrick Street and back to school.

Police cars led and followed the large group of pupils, who also were accompanied on their ride by Police Community Support Officers, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority rangers, Pembrokeshire Safe Cycling instructors, members of the cycling charity, Sustrans, and school staff.

The day continued with pupils from Year 3 to 6 benefiting from the excellent presentations held by the Police and the National Park in the Memorial Park, Pembroke Dock; 'cycle' themed activities in the classroom and further cycle riding courses in the school grounds.

All who took part in the third 'Fun Cycle Day' agree that it is an important fixture in the school diary and is important to the pupils of the school as it reinforces promotion of health and fitness and focuses pupils on their environment.

For the school, the event - co-ordinated by Paul Smith, walking, cycling and horse riding officer of Pembrokeshire County Council - has now become an essential element of Eco, Sustainable and Healthy Schools.
