Parking enforcement officers came under fire again this week for the way in which they have been tackling traffic issues in Tenby.
Discussing the matter at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, Clr. Lawrence Blackhall said he had heard of two recent instances where Pembrokeshire County Council's enforcement officers had been heavy-handed in issuing tickets to people carrying out work in the town.
"I hope these stories are not correct, but one was where a ticket was issued to someone repairing a bus on the South Parade and the other was where the workers for the electric board were carrying out work," he explained.
"It's extraordinary behaviour from these wardens if that's the case; they need to get real, as they are causing immense problems for the town, traders and people trying to carry out work," he added. "It has to be reported to Pembrokeshire County Council that they need to stop with this attitude."
Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown agreed with her colleague that the enforcement officers needed to undergo some further training when it came to dealing with certain situations.
"There seems to be no heart to these wardens; they need to be told to be a bit more friendly to people.
"I've heard of them being really abusive to one carer dropping a lady off at Clareston Court, shouting at them that they couldn't park in that area and getting quite nasty towards the driver. They need to be more understanding towards people and show a bit more leniency," she stated.
Clr. Blackhall felt that if the wardens' military-like approach to their duties continued, then it could result in a serious incident, while Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas suggested that all the individual complaints the council received on parking tickets being issued, should be collated.
Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane said that almost every day recently there had been unregistered vehicles parked in residents only bays on the street she lived.
For this to continually happen, highlighted that something was not working properly with the running of the county council's civil enforcement scheme, she claimed.
Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Julie Evans, said that the town council would write to the county council with their concerns about how the scheme was operating in Tenby.
