A major residential and commercial development at Saundersfoot will include affordable housing for rent and sale, following a strong line adopted by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. At a previous meeting of the authority's development management committee, an application for development of the car park area to the rear of the Cambrian Hotel was refused because the proposal did not make provision for the proven need for affordable housing in the village. At Monday's committee meeting, mmembers heard that applicants Stakefield (Saundersfoot) Ltd. had resubmitted the application which now included several affordable housing units which would be rented to local people. Development management officer Cathy Milner said there would now be five units of private rented accommodation and two units for shared ownership sale. Overall, the development would include 33 flats, four maisonettes and five shops. Members were delighted to learn of the changes and approved the application. The decision is subject to a legal agreement which will ensure that rents of the rented units, even though privately operated, will be on a par with those set for council housing/housing associations and that the other two units will be affordable to buy. Another condition is that all will be occupied by local people. This will be in perpetuity in line with the authority's planning guidance.
