Following an invitation to offer their views to the Management Consultants conducting a survey on the recent Park and Ride scheme, Tenby Walled Town Residents' Association this week submitted their response.
Vice-chairman, Alistair Mackay, summarised the Association's views, which were sent in full to the Management Consultants.
"We felt that overall this year's Park and Ride scheme worked reasonably well, with one major provision. The signs that were meant to ensure visitors used them were hopelessly inadequate so that too many vehicles that should have been diverted there, were instead ending up clogging up the town.
"The mini-buses operating from Butts Field which came into town, could have been further enhanced if the service had been linked with other facilities such as the railway station and the leisure centre.
"Pembrokeshire County Council and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park are hinting very strongly that next year The Salterns Park and Ride will be abandoned and a new site opened in New Hedges, possibly with a retail site.
"Our concern here is twofold. First, if a retail site is an integral part we'd like more thinking on how this will impact on the town's traders. Secondly, if The Salterns is to become another business park that the long-hoped for plans to connect this site with the South Beach will be dashed forever. We would like to resurrect both this plan and the idea of an underpass to connect Butts Field to North Beach.
"With the present Park and Ride sites you can at least walk to them if you miss the last bus; it's an awful lot further to New Hedges.
"We have also made a plea for an integrated transport system that recognises the needs of the town's businesses, residents and, not least, the inhabitants of Caldey who use the harbour as their front door all year round.
"Finally we requested that we be involved in any proposals for both New Hedges and Francis Yard (should that plan re-surface) and once gain sought information on the criteria for success in any studies of this year's traffic experiments."
