Pandas, bottlenose dolphins or Bengal Tigers? That was one of the choices facing pupils at Tavernspite CP School last week.

Children from Year 4 want to adopt an animal, and as part of a special assembly, tried to persuade other pupils to vote for their favourite animal.

The assembly was to mark the presentation of the Gold Sustainable Schools Award, and adopting an animal is just one of the latest ideas from the pupils.

They told visitors about their eco-committee and their Fair Trade group, which will be selling items at the Christmas fair.

"We care very much about the environment and we really enjoy doing all the different eco-projects at school," said Tegan Harrison, of the school eco-committee.

The school recently had solar panels installed and pupils have been making efforts to reduce emissions by encouraging people to share lifts. Staff, parents and children share in the school's eco-vision.

The gold Sustainable Schools Award recognises the school's continued commitment to environmental issues, global citizenship and sustainability.
