Pupils at a primary school in Pembroke have been reaping the rewards of a recent enterprise fair, thanks to a donation from Valero Pembroke Refinery.

Ysgol Gelli Aur pupils took part in last month's Pembrokeshire Enterprise Fair event, held at the Riverside Shopping area in Haverfordwest. There they sold a range of handmade products, including heart rags, bunting and bookmarks.

Members of Ysgol Gelli Aur's School Council bought the materials for the day from a fundraising drive, which included selling pancakes to fellow pupils and staff.

With the pancake ingredients paid for by a donation from Valero, school council members were given the opportunity to test their entrepreneurial skills in advance of the enterprise fair itself.

Class teacher Melisa Rees, who organised the school's involvement in the enterprise fair, said: "The whole exercise has been really successful. Not only did the children get to learn more about running a business, but they also had to work together as a team as well as having lots of fun in the process. Thanks to Valero, we were able to sell the pancakes to buy the materials the children sold on the day. We've since used the profits to buy the children rewards, such as DVDs, for all their hard work."

Valero public affairs Manager Stephen Thornton, commented saying: "It is vitally important for young people to develop the business skills needed later in life, and it has been really encouraging to see Ysgol Gelli Aur take such an enthusiastic approach to this project. Valero were delighted to be able to help those pupils taking part, and we're happy to hear they had a lot of fun during their efforts."
