Come and find out what you can do in Pembrokeshire to overcome poverty and suffering. Oxfam Live, a public event designed to help people find out more about Oxfam's work and the challenges they face, is coming to Pembroke for the first time ever on Wednesday, May 3, at the Global Connections Development Education Centre from 1.30 until 6 pm. The event will give people the opportunity to look at all aspects of Oxfam's work in Wales and overseas, including their response to humanitarian crises, their campaigns, and their long-term development work. There will also be a free music event from 6.30 pm onwards where local acoustic band Ember will play a selection of songs and those attending will be given the opportunity to take a look at the excellent work on display at the Global Connections centre. Amanda Perrins from the Global Connections Development Education Centre in Pembroke said: "We are very much looking forward to hosting this event with Oxfam Cymru. Hearing people talk about their work for Oxfam and how our efforts here in Wales can have a real impact abroad will be really inspiring. We hope people will come to the event in order to be motivated to work with us to overcome poverty and suffering." 2005 was an incredible year for Oxfam. The aid agency responded to two of the world's biggest disasters - the tsunami and the Kashmir earthquake - as well as bringing together millions of people in the hugely popular campaigning movement,'Make Poverty History'. Catherine Hester, head of Oxfam Cymru, said: "Oxfam Live events are vital to Oxfam as they allow us to hear the opinions and feedback of our supporters, and for us to show our appreciation of their support. They are also an opportunity for anyone interested to find out more about the many ways in which they can get involved with Oxfam Cymru." Oxfam directors, as well as international staff will be speaking at the event in Pembroke's Global Connections where people will be able to ask questions, hear first hand about how they do what they do, and see the difference supporters' contributions make. An international programme staff member from Vietnam, Pham Thi Hong, will also be at the event talking about Oxfam's long-term international development work in Vietnam, and an Oxfam director will be there to answer questions. Participants will be given an overview of the emergencies Oxfam responded to in 2005, such as the tsunami and the Kashnmir earthquake, and through a demonstration of some of Oxfam's life-saving equipment, they will learn more about their work in emergency situations.
