Response has been overwhelming to Fairtrade Fortnight with community activities and events throughout Pembrokeshire. On Tuesday, March 7, Milford Haven followed Tenby's good example from last year and received Fairtrade Town Status with the Mayor of Milford, Clr. Rhys Sinnett, accepting the honour on behalf of the town. Friday, March 10, saw a very successful Fairtrade fair and coffee morning at Crymych Market Hall, with over 100 people going through the doors to find out more about Fairtrade, buy Fairtrade goods and sample complimentary Fairtrade tea, coffee and biscuits. Chris Urack, organiser of Global Connections events and activities during Fairtrade Fortnight, said: "It is really good that this year we are working with more community groups in our county and there is a real need for Fairtraders to now link up and move towards making Pembrokeshire a Fairtrade county." On Saturday, March 11, as part of the Milford Fairtrade Town celebrations, a lively street celebration took place in the early afternoon to entertain the local shoppers. There was live music from a local band, a choir from the local Meads School and a Fairtrade information stand. Monday, March 13, saw a Fairtrade Coffee Morning at WI House in Haverfordwest, organised by the WI and well attended particularly by WI representatives from all corners of Pembrokeshire. There was a Fair-trade slide show and stand provided by Global Connections and a Fairtrade raffle with a Fairtrade coffee making set, donated by Marks and Spencer, as one of the prizes. The following day, Chris Urack presented Fairtrade match balls to youngsters at Pembroke RFC. Then on Saturday, March 18, at the Monkton Swifts AFC match against Tenby, he presented a Fairtrade football to the team, as well as displaying a giant Fairtrade football made by the children of Monkton at a community event the day before. Along with the Communities First Partnership, Global Connections enjoyed a jointly organised big Fairtrade open day. A banana producer from the Windward Isles, accompanied by a representative from the Welsh Fairtrade Forum and local MP Nick Ainger attended the very popular event. There were also Fairtrade stalls and community artists, Josie Coggins and Pip Lewis, along students from Pembrokeshire College and local children made the giant Fairtrade football, there were free Fairtrade fruit passion juices for the children, supplied by Gerber Foods, and Cafe Vending, of Carmarthen, supplied free Fairtrade tea and coffee for the adults. Lloyd Dasilva, the Fairtrade producer, also provided a special Fairtrade assembly for the children and staff at the nearby Monkton Priory Junior School. "Apart from public events, the Global Connections team have been working flat out on other project work promoting Fairtrade Fortnight with schools, youth groups and other community groups throughout our county and beyond," said projects officer Nicky Mallen. Global Connections is indebted to Department of International Development (DFID), the Sustainable Development Fund 'Planning for a Sustainable Future', Welsh Assembly Government, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and New Opportunities/ENFYS for core funding.
