Around 70 members, supporters and friends of the Tenby and Saundersfoot branch of the Labour Party, gathered in Tenby last Friday evening for the Constituency Dinner. Held at the Fourcroft Hotel, the gathering included three Westminster MPs and an Assembly Member. All had come to enjoy a good dinner and the conviviality of being amongst like-minded people, drawn from all walks of life in South Pembrokeshire and Carmarthen West, and, of course, to hear the invited speaker. The guest speaker for the evening was Rt. Hon. Peter Hain MP, Secretary of State for Wales and Northern Ireland. Accompanied by his wife Elizabeth, Mr. Hain had travelled to Tenby from a Secretary of State visit to North Wales. After dinner, Mr. Hain spoke in an amusing, anecdotal way to begin with, then went on to remind his audience of the achievements of the Labour government and the last eight years or so and how important it was to be looking forward to continue rolling out the programme of social justice Labour was committed to. Later, local MP Nick Ainger spoke and then, briefly, local AM Christine Gwyther on local issues. Tony Wales, chairman of the local branch, invited Elizabeth to draw the raffle, which had raised money for the constituency campaign funds. Winner of the first prize, a spa treatment for two people at Celtic Haven, generously donated by Mr. Phillip Evans, was Mrs. Ceinwen Were, who had also won last year's first prize! Mike Thorne won a large bottle of Brecon Gin donated by Christine Gwyther AM, while the House of Commons brandy with two glasses was won by a supporter from the Narberth branch, as was a box of chocolates donated by Rosemary Proctor. At nearly midnight, as people streamed out of the hotel into a starry, starry night, all agreed it had been a most enjoyable occasion. The next constituency event will be the Quiz Evening hosted by the Pembroke and PD branch on February 10. If interested in attending or getting up a team, 'phone Neil on 01646 651677.
