The 26th annual Pembrokeshire Chevron Primary Schools' Music Festival was held at Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest, on Saturday. Over 400 primary school musicians participated in this year's festival which was organised by the Pembrokeshire County Council Music Service and sponsored by Chevron. During the morning, individual performers and ensemble groups participated in competitions for various categories of instruments and ensembles. The professional adjudicators who gave their valuable support and advice to the young performers were: Jacqui Scaife (woodwind); Alan Bourne (brass); Antoinette Metcalf (strings); Christopher Lovegrove (piano and keyboard); Georgina Davies (ensembles); Peter Morgan (percussion). These competitions provided the young musicians with a valuable experience of performing to an appreciative and friendly audience of parents, teachers and friends. At the afternoon concert, the area orchestras and bands performed to a capacity audience. The programme was presented by Chris Llewellyn, head of the county music service. The family of schools groups who performed were: Pembroke Junior Schools' Orchestra (conductor: Joanne Underwood); Tenby Area Junior Schools' String Orchestra (Rebecca Whitehurst); Cerddorfa Bro Waldo (John and Iris Thirkettle); Tenby Area Junior Wind Band (Judy Pyart); Haverfordwest Area Orchestra (Elizabeth Cawood); St. David's Area Orchestra (Hilary Lewis); Bro Jemima Orchestra (Philippa Roberts). During the afternoon concert, the winners of the open competitions performed. This year, the Open Brass competition was won by Ben Lawrence, of Ysgol Glannau Gwaun. On his trumpet, he played Gigue by Bach and was accompanied by Mrs. Hilary Lewis. The Open Woodwind winner was Sarah Davies, of St. Teilo's School, Tenby, who played the clarinet. She performed Adagio by Mozart accompanied by her teacher Dr. Stuart Evans. Violinist Naomi Hunt from Tenby Junior School was the winner of the Open String competition and played Sonatine by Dvorak accompanied by Mrs. Miranda Davies. The winner of the Open Piano competition was Maddie Robbins, of Ysgol Maenclochog. She performed a piece by Heller entitled Opus 45, No. 2. Winning percussionist, Corrine Yau from Narberth CP School, played Boogaly Woogaly by Keith Bartlett on the xylophone, ably accompanied at the piano by her teacher, Mrs. Melanie Walker. Also playing in the concert were the percussion trio from Broad Haven School who were the winners of the ensemble competition. On behalf of the adjudicators, Peter Morgan announced that the overall winner of this year's festival was violinist Naomi Hunt from Tenby Junior School. The numbers of pupils who participated in this year's event and the high standards of performance clearly demonstrate the strength of music in the county's primary schools and why Pembrokeshire continues to be one of the leading musical counties in Wales.
