The pupils of Templeton School and Drs. Allen, Cadbury, Mackintosh and Harries, of Meddygfa Rhiannon, Narberth, held a Healthy Heart Evening at the school last week. The work was part of a surgery-based project funded by the Welsh Assembly aiming to reduce the incidence of heart disease. The evening was for the whole family and wider community. Over 150 adults and children attended. The children designed posters and drawings about looking after your heart beforehand, and worked with artists, Jane Hovey and Jasmine Knight, to design and paint a giant game of twister with the same message. During the evening, they learnt resuscitation skills with great enthusiasm, made badges, took part in experiments, the mystery vegetable competition and blindfold fruit tasting. "We wanted to show that looking after your heart can be enjoyable," said Jane Howe, practice nurse. "So, as well as lots of information on healthy eating, exercise, smoking and alcohol, we had some delicious food and bread to try from the cafes in Narberth and healthy cakes made by parents." There were also belly dancing, Tai Chi and aromatherapy sessions to try, as well as fitness testing and a healthy heart MOT. In addition, there was also information about what is happening within the school - school dinners, and the 30,40,50 Club to encourage the children to run/walk each week, building up an annual total. Added Jane: "We ended with a raffle, with funds raised for Withybush Hospital and Templeton School. We are very grateful to everyone who donated prizes, to all those who ran sessions, to all the parents who helped and to the pupils and staff of Templeton School for all the work they did."
