With the wintry weather causing havoc with the day's fixture programme, Narberth's clash against Rumney was the only National League division one game to take to the field on Saturday, with the Otters coming away from Riverside Park comfortable victors by 46 points to 22.

Both sides were committed to an open, expansive game, with Rumney controlling things well up front to give them a first phase platform, but it was in broken play where the Otters shone, allowing them to turn the tide after a shaky opening period.

They may be languishing near the foot of the table, but Rumney certainly went out to make a game of things and got off to a bright start, with lock Grant Harrington touching down for a try near the posts within the first three minutes and outside-half Chris Day converted.

Otters' stand-off Simon Daniel failed to reduce the deficit when he was off target with a penalty attempt, while a try also went begging when centre Elgan Vittle was unable to hold onto the final pass after a defence-splitting break by wing Nick Jones.

The homesters edged further in front approaching the half-hour mark when number eight Gavin Lucas took the blind-side option from a close range scrum and muscled over for an unconverted try.

Twelve points to nil down, the Otters started to take control in the loose, allowing their threequarter line to launch a series of attacks on the home defences.

Cornerstone was wing Jones, who used his pace to create the gap before linking with Vittle, who wrong-footed the Rumney cover before sending fullback Gareth James over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Day missed with a penalty at the other end for the homesters, before Daniel reduced the margin to four points with a successful three-pointer.

Daniel failed with another penalty minutes later and was then forced to leave the field with a leg injury.

The stand-off's injury meant a reshuffle for the Otters, with James moving from fullback to the half-back berth and Jones dropping back into the number 15 slot to allow Mike Jones to come onto the left wing.

Rumney looked to be going into the break still holding onto their slender advantage, but the whole game was transformed in the final few minutes of the first half.

With Jason Jennings, Simon Davies and Meurig Daniel giving 110 per cent in the loose, the Otters started to turn up the heat, with Jennings well placed to take a try-scoring pass after Jones had again split the home defence.

Although James, inheriting the kicking duties along with the stand-off berth, missed the conversion, his kicking from hand was matchless and netted the Otters another try just before the break when he chipped the Rumney defence and won the race to the touch down.

James then added a superb conversion from the touchline to put the visitors firmly in the driving seat going into the interval.

Narberth increased their advantage just after the oranges when hooker Craig Hawkins rounded off a move from second phase with another try converted by James.

Rumney hit back with an unconverted try by veteran prop David Smith, but the comeback was short-lived, Jones capping a superb performance with a try as he stormed over on an angle after centre Andrew Bowen wrong-footed the home cover.

Never ones to throw in the towel, Rumney again reduced the deficit with a well-taken unconverted try from wing Wesley Pooley, but the Otters effectively ended all resistance in the final quarter with two more tries

The first came from replacement wing Mike Jones following some straight running down the middle of the park by Daniel Gravell, while Gravell himself delivered the coup-de-grace at the end of proper time when he used his pace down the right flank to touch down .

James converted the Gravell try with what turned out to be the last kick of the game.

After something of a barren period, the Otters were good value for their win and two victories in succession to start the New Year will surely stand them in good stead for tomorrow (Saturday) when they face a difficult clash with Bonymaen at the Lewis Lloyd.
