Narberth 49 pts. Corus 14

Although it was never a stampede, Narberth dominated the try-scoring to run in seven tries in a bonus points win without dominating the match in the manner which the scoreboard might seem to imply

Before the interval, Steel were camped inside the Narberth half for long periods, but did not make that territorial advantage count by failing to create and to take try-scoring opportunities.

In sharp contrast, the Otters made the most of each visit inside the Corus 22 to score three tries.

Steel spent too much time trying to run at and break though the stranglehold imposed by the Narberth defence and did not pass the ball along their backline enough.

The trademark long overhead pass by Otters' outside-half Aled Davies has been a feature of his game for a number of seasons.

He has found more consistency and accuracy with the ploy this season and it has produced a number of tries.

It conjured up the first try on Saturday within just two minutes when winger Tom Bonnell was the recipient and Bonnell beat two defenders to score in the right corner. Aled Davies converted the try from the touchline.

A penalty by Aled Davies extended the lead and more excellent handling and running rugby at pace resulted in two more tries before the break for centre Richard Davies and the ever-alert hooker Dan Smith.

Unfortunately they were not converted.

The first genuine handling movement for Corus through the first half created an overlap on the left and fullback Aled Bevan cut inside to touch down for a try converted by centre Scott Robinson.

After the break, the Otters scored four more tries. Two were finished well by Tom Bonnell, including one like the famous Irish try by Michael Phillips, but this time hooker Dan Smith and Bonnell used the correct ball after spotting a chance to score!

When Bonnell puts his foot down, few opponents have the pace and skill to stop him and he finished off under the posts.

His second try, which finished the scoring for the afternoon, was created by scrum-half Emyr Jones, who threw out a long overhead pass and it enabled Bonnell to complete his second successive hat-trick.

The other tries were scored by fullback Roger Davies and the quick centre Steve Martin. Aled Davies converted two tries and also kicked a penalty.

Again Corus claimed one try during the half. It came from another overlap and resulted in a well-worked touchdown for Scott Robinson in the right corner, which Robinson converted himself with his reliable left foot.

Commenting after the match, Otters' director of rugby, Jonathan Dodd, said: "We were very pleased with the result today when we produced one of our better performances of the season.

"We did everything right in a good all-round team performance. The defence held tight and we played some good attacking rugby to score seven tries against quality opposition like Corus.

"Centre Steve Martin was outstanding and there were other very good displays from winger Tom Bonnell, outside-half Aled Davies and scrum-half Emyr Jones, who was on loan from Newcastle Emlyn. Up front, the pack provided sufficient ball to make an impact and lock Alex Jenkins had another fine game."

Match sponsors, the Narberth Fire Fighters, selected scrum-half Emyr Jones as the man-of-the-match.

Narberth fielded: Roger Davies Nick Jones, Steve Martin, Richard Davies (Mark Heywood), Tom Bonnell, Aled Davies, Emyr Jones, Sean Lloyd (Tom Slater), Dan Smith (Gareth Jones), Justin Hughes (captain), Alex Jenkins, Chris James (Jason Jennings and Simon Griffiths), Gareth Bateman, Wayne Williams and Jim Kaumaitotoya.
