NARBERTH 35 pts

RESOLVEN 12

Thirteen certainly wasn't unlucky for Narberth on Saturday with their 35 points to 12 victory over Resolven making a baker's dozen of wins on the trot for the West Walians.

The Otters continued their push for promotion to National League division one unchecked, outscoring Resolven by five tries to two on a slippery Lewis Lloyd surface to move nine points clear at the top of the table.

With pack and threequarters combining in fluid attacking rugby, the Otters soon had Resolven under pressure, with outside-half Julian Howells slotting over an early penalty to open the homesters' account.

The Otters continued to press - Chris Macdonald only being denied a try through a foot in touch after he jinked blind from the back of a scrum - and it seemed only a matter of time before the Resolven defence cracked.

Impetus came from back row man Gareth Bennett who, carrying the ball well as always alongside Alan Reynolds and skipper Simon Davies, moved play open from the touchline.

Howells wrong-footed the Resolven cover, allowing fullback Ifan Jones to come into the line at pace and touch down under the posts.

Howells converted, but was off target with a later penalty into the wind.

Resolven pivot Phil Evans was equally unsuccessful with an opportunity to open the visitors' account at the other end, before Steve Hartland broke through from a quick tap penalty to further extend the Otters' advantage.

Centre Gareth Barry - debuting in place of injured South African team-mate Rouan Nel - then increased the homesters' lead with what many felt was one of the best tries at the Lewis Lloyd for a number of years.

The youngster took possession deep inside his own half and carved his way through the Resolven ranks to touch down for a superb solo try, which was converted by Howells.

Just before the break, Resolven stand-off Evans reduced the arrears with an unconverted try.

Another penalty from Howells just after the change around maintained the impetus for the homesters, before a sustained period of pressure from the visitors saw flanker Johan McPhall snatch a try which Evans converted.

However, the final third belonged to the Otters, with Hartland - who received the nod as man of the match - setting up the first of two late tries by fellow winger John Whitticombe and only being denied his second touchdown by a forward pass.

During the interval, Narberth Supporters committee treasurer Geoff Morgan presented a cheque for £1,000 - the proceeds of the Supporters Club Christmas Draw - to club chairman Dorian Phillips, bringing the total donated so far this season to £2,500.
