Narberth 27 pts. Cwmllynfell 15
For the third game on the trot, the Otters were forced to play 'catch up' as Cwmllynfell took control in their fight for Division One West survival and Narberth were 15-8 points adrift with 12 minutes of the match remaining.
In the end, the skill and fitness of the Narberth team and fresh legs off the bench as hooker Dan Smith, flanker Chris Scarf and scrum-half Andrew Davies entered the fray, enabled the Otters to get out of jail without leaving it until the last minute as they did at Builth Wells.
Cwm took the early initiative and looked the better team in a match littered with yellow cards as five players at different times spent a period cooling off in the sin-bin.
Narberth lock Alex Jenkins was the first to leave the field after 16 minutes and Cwm took advantage of the disparity in numbers to go in front when winger Andrew Luther went over for a try converted by outside-half Adrian Thomas. It was set up by a penalty kick towards the corner flag and the forwards drove the ball on from the line-out, before Luther was released to score.
Otters number 10 Craig Jones clawed back three points with a penalty after 28 minutes, so that only four points separated the teams at the interval.
The Otters started the fight back in the early stages of the second half when wing Nick Jones crossed the line for an unconverted try in the corner after an incisive run by powerful centre John Leyshon.
Cwmllynfell scored again as centre Paul Davies restored the lead for the visitors with a penalty and later extended the lead with an unconverted try.
Narberth did not throw in the towel in the last 15 minutes, but started to attack in earnest and were rewarded when number eight Steffan Phillips crashed over for an unconverted try. It started in broken play when lock Alex Jenkins won the ball to trigger the play which culminated in the try for Phillips.
There was more to come when play-maker and fullback Roger Davies set off on one of his dazzling runs after he grabbed the ball from an attempted kick ahead by Cwm.
Davies ran up the touchline and side-stepped one defender, then with a delicate kick over the head of another ,he followed the ball, grasped it again and went over the line for a try which he also converted.
Any remaining doubt about the final outcome of the match was removed when Steffan Phillips scored his second try to cap an excellent all-round performance in another class move by the Narberth team. Roger Davies converted so that there was no way back for the gutsy Cwmllynfell side.
Speaking to Observer Sport after the match, Otters forwards coach Sean Gale said: "In the end it was a very good win, but the first half was disappointing and we did not hit our targets.
"Cwmllynfell came out with all guns firing and we made a slow start.
"In the last quarter of the match, our will to win, superior fitness and ability gave us the advantage, and late tries by two stand-out players, Roger Davies and Steffan Phillips, gave us a bonus point win.
"We are looking forward to the visit of Carmarthen Athletic this (Friday) evening, but there is room for improvement in our performances and we must hit the road running for the rest of the season."
The Otters Holt match sponsor was Lucy Jones, accountant.
