Cwmllynfell 15 pts. Narberth 26
Two injury-time converted tries enabled the Otters to snatch a bonus point win at the death and in doing so jump over Tonmawr into second place in the Division One West table.
It was a sluggish start by Narberth on a sluggish pitch, but full credit to Cwmllynfell who played nothing like a team struggling at the bottom of the table.
There were showers at intervals throughout the match and Cwm played down the slope with the benefit of the wind at their backs to establish a lead of 10 points at the interval.
Outside-half Dean Clancy gave his team the lead after 10 minutes with a penalty kick and that was increased with a try by fullback Craig Jones, assisted by some defensive mistakes by the visitors. The try was also converted by Clancy.
In the second half, the Otters started to pull things together and after seven minutes, winger Tom Bonnell went over for an unconverted try in the right corner.
It resulted from some slick hands when play was switched quickly from the left touchline over to the right, but nevertheless Bonnell had to use his pace off the mark to beat the covering defence and score.
Seven minutes later, Aled Davies had a chance to increase the lead with a long distance penalty kick which was just off target.
Midway through the second half, Narberth were pushed further back when after 24 minutes, number eight Paul Rummings broke through from a scrum about 10 yards from the Narberth line for an unconverted try.
This was cancelled out five minutes later when centre Steve Martin finished well to score a try following another quick switch of play from left to right. Aled Davies made no mistake with the conversion kick, so that the visitors were just two points behind.
The Otters kept pressing forward, but were unable to take the lead until the fourth minute of injury time.
Centre Steve Martin, who was subsequently named man of the match by the Narberth team management, created the try with a defence-splitting run from the halfway line.
Although the move was stopped, the ball was recycled and number eight Jamie Bohata showed that he has now regained full fitness after his injury with a powerful burst at speed to shrug off attempted tackles and cross for a try converted by outside-half Aled Davies.
Narberth were now 14 points ahead, but with some minutes of injury time left, Cwm could still have regained the lead.
Man-of-the-match Steve Martin had other ideas, however, and with another top quality finish increased the lead with a try near the posts. Aled Davies converted to put the game out of reach of a plucky Cwmllynfell team who once again lost their lead in the closing stages of the game, as they have done so often this season.
Commenting after the match, Narberth forwards coach Sean Gale said: "On a soggy pitch, we did not have the greatest of starts, but in all fairness, the boys did a totally professional job.
"Cwmllynfell are a very bright side and defended their territory well, so to come away with a bonus point win was very pleasing.
"It was a little bit late in coming, but as coaches we were proud of the boys and the way they stuck to their job.
"The wind had some influence on play and Cwmllynfell had the benefit in the first half.
"We let them in for the first try by missing a tackle and our discipline in terms of penalties was not as it should have been.
"We introduced some fresh faces in the last 20 minutes, which brought some impetus, and it was a great squad performance as the game is about 20 players these days and we did that very well.
"Steve Martin scored two lovely tries, scrum-half Andrew Davies did a lot of unseen work in the first half and showed tremendous energy. In addition, there was good work by the second rows and replacement prop Ryan Perrott.
"But it was great display in the end by all 20 players and the handling of the replacements worked very well."
Tomorrow (Saturday), Narberth have a crowd-pulling home tie against Premiership team Cardiff in the fifth round of the SWALEC Welsh Cup. Kick-off is at 2.30 pm at the Lewis Lloyd ground.
Narberth fielded: Nick Jones (Matthew Davies), Tom Bonnell, Steve Martin, Richard Davies, Jonathan Morgan, Aled Davies, Andrew Davies (Adrian Killa), Tom Slater (Ryan Perrott), Dan Smith, Justin Hughes captain, Chris James, Jason Jennings (Alex Jenkins), Gareth Bateman (Richard Sharpe-Williams), Andrew Dennis and Jamie Bohata.
