Narberth rounded off one of their greatest seasons to date with an emphatic 54 points to 27 win over Pencoed at the Lewis Lloyd ground on Saturday.

Already promoted to National League division one as division two champions, the Otters could not be accused of coasting in their final home game of the 2001/02 campaign as they rattled up another half century of points to take their league tally over the 1000 mark.

Already relegated Pencoed, also had nothing to lose and the large crowd were treated to an entertaining afternoon of running rugby.

With some 250 of their sponsors and guests boosting the crowd, Narberth perhaps tried a little too hard to put on a show at the outset and were guilty of some slipshod handling which saw easy tries go begging.

And they has cause to rue their missed chances further when Pencoed hooker Tim Henson popped over in the corner for an unconverted try.

However, the Otters have not been division front runners for most of the season without good reason and they quickly bounced back when centre Elgan Vittle split the visiting defence and sent Jamie Bohata over to touch down.

Ever reliable scrum half Chris Macdonald increased the homesters lead when e nipped over from close range following a line out and, just before the interval the half back was instrumental in sending outside half Simon Daniel over for a super solo try which he also converted.

Macdonald added another classy try after the change around when he chipped the closing Pencoed defence and won the race to touch down.

The siege gun boot of Daniel again added the extras.

Pencoed refused to drop their heads and were boosted by an opportunist drop goal from centre Huw Rees.

One of the feature points of the Otters' campaign this season has been the ability of prop Fifitapuku Faletau to break the gain line and bag tries with his straight, no nonsense running and the South Sea islander delighted the crowd with another such demonstration when he bulldozed over for a try, again converted by Daniel.

Centre Kevin Green spearheaded a spirited Pencoed fightback when he crossed for a try converted by fullback Gareth David.

However, elusive centre Vittle rounded off another flowing three-quarter move with a touchdown which took the Otters over the 1000 points mark for the season, and Daniel improved the tally further with another conversion.

The Otters made a couple of replacements in the second half with long serving lock Iestyn Evans receiving a standing ovation for his 150th league appearance for the club.

Pencoed again struck back with a well worked unconverted try from Huw Rees and another from outside half Mark Davies, which David converted but Otters fullback Wayne Jones ended the game as a contest with two tries of his own.

Daniel converted one to bring his success rate on the day to seven out of eight.

Following the match Mrs. Cynthia Evans, chairman of the Supporters Club presented club chairman John Williams with a cheque for £4000 as a result of various fundraising events.

District H representative John Jones presented the player of the year award to Simon Daniel while the Athletic player of the year award went to John Bowen.

Hedd Davies picked up the Youth team award.

Club president Garth Parker also presented each member of the Otters squad with a medal to commemorate their promotion and championship.
