Narberth Rugby Club is in danger of losing £15,000 in the next five years, as the very successful Supporters Committee could fold next week.

In recent years, in a good year of fund-raising, the committee has donated amounts of £2,000 to £3,000 to the Rugby Club.

At a time when every penny counts, the Otters cannot afford to lose this amount of money.

After lengthy periods of service, the three leading officers have retired from the committee and, if their positions are not filled, the organisation will close.

Geoff Morgan has been treasurer for over 15 years, besides being the staff paymaster on behalf of the club. Mike Richards has been secretary for five years and chairman John Howell has been both chairman and a committee member for many years.

Since 1992, the Supporters Committee has raised over £86,000 for the Rugby Club. This money has supported the club in various ways, such as assisting the club fund the cost of meeting floodlights, to assist in the provision of hot showers in the changing rooms and ground maintenance.

The top flight facilities at the Lewis Lloyd ground are used by Junior, Youth and Senior teams.

The Supporters Committee has also supplied carpets and curtains at the clubhouse, as well as providing the large television in the members bar. In addition, the committee has subsidised the cost of the supporters bus to away matches.

If the committee has to fold, its support to the club will be very sadly missed.

New members are needed as a matter of urgency. The commitment is not too time consuming. Meetings are usually once a month, the meat draw is currently organised by stewardess Anne Lonsdale and the staff, but new members are needed to help at home first team matches in connection with the Supporters Committee £50 Draw. The big fund-raiser is the Christmas Draw and members are needed to obtain prizes and to administer ticket sales.

A last-ditch attempt will be made to keep the committee alive at a very important meeting on Tuesday, September 10, at 7.30 pm at the clubhouse.

All supporters are urged to make every effort to attend the meeting to form a new committee and to continue the sterling work carried out by the retiring officers and members.
