PENFRO Centre, Pembroke School, resounded to the strains of the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra last week, providing a night of music by Tchaikovsky, and repeating its anniversary programme given in Cardiff recently.
The evening provided a contrasting mixture from Marche Slave (op 31) and Little Russian Symphony No2 in C Minor (op 17) to the gentle Sleeping Beauty Suite (op 66) and then the resounding 1812 Overture (op 49) for a spectacular conclusion with firework display provided by Westcoast Fireworks.
The event was arranged by the Rotary Club of Pembroke, and co-ordinated by Rotarian Frank Harries, who acted as compere.
During the Texaco-sponsored concert, Texaco's general manager refinery operations, Phil Walters, announced the continuation of Texaco's support to the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra and presented its business manager, Allen Jones, with the sponsorship cheque.
The partnership of Texaco and the CPO goes back to 1998 with the involvement of the Texaco Young Musician of Wales competition, and the continued support will enable the CPO to perform at another three venues in Pembrokeshire this year.
The next event is the 'Proms in the Park Night' in Saundersfoot on Saturday, June 8, followed by a concert in the De Valence Pavilion, Tenby, on Saturday, July 13, in aid of Tenovus, and the final event will be a first appearance in Milford Haven, on Saturday, September 21, at Milford Haven School, on the final night of Milford Haven's Music Festival, all three concerts being sponsored by Texaco Ltd.
The President of the Rotary Club of Pembroke, Anthony Owen, spoke, mentioning sponsors Texaco and HSBC. The evening raised over £3,500 for charity. Raffle prizes were provided by Irish Ferries.
President Chris Vater and the members of the Inner Wheel provided refreshments for the orchestra.
