Once again a packed auditorium at Folly Farm, Begelly, resounded to the strains of the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra last week, providing a night of music aptly entitled 'From Russia with Love' following a performance at St. David's Hall, Cardiff, the previous night.

The evening provided a contrasting mix from Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave and the colourful Symphony No2 by Borodin to the light-hearted Jazz Suite No2 by Shostakovitch. But the highlight was a rendition of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No2 in C minor (op18), with Jeffrey Howard playing piano capturing the broad sweep of the melodic lines and inescapable feelings of melancholy and nostalgia.

The Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra are fully sponsored by Texaco Ltd. and the concert was arranged through the Rotary Club of Pembroke, which received over £5,000 raised for charity.

Projects already funded from previous events include provision and refurbishment of sensory rooms at Pembroke School and The Anchorage, support of youth groups participating in international sport or individual challenges at local level, supporting Wales Air Ambulance and Wales Cancer Research at national level and providing shelter boxes for earthquake and mudslide victims recently on an international level.

There will be a Male Voice Choir Concert at Monkton Priory Church on Friday, March 17, at 7.30 pm. Tickets are available from any Pembroke Rotarian. Texaco Ltd. will be sponsoring the Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra next at Scolton Manor for a 'Night at the Proms' on Saturday, July 8.
