Postponed early in January because of snow, Narberth's home fixture against Carmarthen Athletic in Division One West will have to be re-arranged again as Friday evening's match was called off by mach referee Colin Kirkhouse because of a waterlogged pitch.

Otters director of rugby Jonathan Dodd thought that the match should have been played. Speaking to Observer Sport, he said "It is very disappointing that for the second time this year we have had to postpone the game against Carmarthen Athletic.

"The postponement is going to put more pressure on our squad as we do not want to extend our season into May.

"Carmarthen Athletic did not want to play due to weather conditions and, although we thought that the referee considered initially that the pitch was playable, he did express concern about the centre circle which we forked subsequently.

"The Carmarthen Athletic coaches were concerned about the safety of their players, but we did not think that it was an issue. We accept that Mr Colin Kirkhouse, the match referee, had to go with it, so that the match was postponed because of health and safety issues."

Carmarthen Athletic team manager Stuart Harris took a contrary view and argued that the match could have been called off sooner.

He said: "When we arrived we could see that the pitch was not playable as there was a lot of surface water on the field. The referee's initial reaction was that the pitch was unplayable and he decided to call the game off after walking the rest of the field when Narberth had carried out the forking of the central area near the halfway line. In some areas the water came up to his ankles.

"Twice this season we have had to travel to Narberth and found the pitch unplayable upon arrival and we thought that Narberth should have arranged for a qualified referee to inspect the pitch before asking us to travel."

At the time of going to press, the new date for the re-arranged fixture had yet to be agreed.

No one was more surprised about the postponement than Narberth club chairman, John Owen, who still holds the record for the most first team appearances by an Otters player. In his notes for the match programme, he had said: "Earlier in the season we were given a right going over at Carmarthen and they were flying high at the top of the league. Their fortunes have changed surprisingly since then, despite that, we still expect a tough encounter tonight. At least there should be no dispute about ground conditions this time."

Tomorrow (Saturday), Narberth travel to Margam for an away fixture against Corus.
