As part of 'One World Week' and 'Mind the Gap' celebrations a group of Tenby's St. Johns Pilots, Junior Church and their friends spent a day during the holidays tackling the problems of conservation. They focused their attention on aspects of recycling using the household waste materials they had collected. Various art and craft items were produced, which included a collage, weaving, cardboard gifts boxes, Christmas decorations and a 'rubbish' monster. These are now on display in the church. As they planted beech seeds in yoghurt cartons, the children discussed our often wasteful overuse of paper, far exceeding the planting of new forests. The day's activities were concluded with the children expressing their understanding of the need to protect God's world and the environment by each group performing (amidst much laughter) a short puppet show entitled 'Recycling'. During the day, Mr. David Rees, lifeboat visits officer, collected a cheque for £400 raised by the Pilots at a coffee morning during the summer as a thank you to the RNLI for an invitation to the lifeboat station during one of their Friday sessions. Mr. Stephen Lowe, the station mechanic, had very kindly given them a most informative tour, much enjoyed by everyone. The modern technology on the 'Hayden Miller' was of particular interest to the young people, as was his amusing talk about the life of a crew member. 'One World Day' at St. Johns had proved to be thoroughly enjoyable for everyone, young people and adults; a vital understanding had been gained of some of the problems of modern day living confronting each one of us. The environment, global warming and its consequence uppermost in everyone's mind at the present time. "We will protect our world," was emphatically chorused by the young people as they discussed the issues highlighted by the day. However, as the remaining rubbish was collected for disposal, they became aware of the need for even more local recycling facilities if we are to play our part in the protection and conservation of our environment and planet for the future. Thanks go to everyone who made the day so much fun.
