Global Connections, a Pembroke based company, recently hosted the One World Week event for the fourth consecutive year. All of their activities aim to raise awareness of global issues by providing training and workshops in the schools and youth and community sector.

A party of Greek and Italian schoolteachers joined Global Connections in the One World Week celebrations held during half term in Pembroke. They assisted in the children's workshops, took part in the Fair Trade Evening and even joined in the street jamboree through Pembroke on the Saturday.

During One World Week, the emphasis was on promoting Global Citizenship by fun participatory methods for all the community. The week kicked off on Monday, October 27, with the children's workshops at the Eastgate Centre; these were provided throughout the week by Global Staff, volunteers, Sand Palace Arts and assisted by the Greek and Italian teachers. The theme of the week was moving stories and included art workshops in which the children made costumes and banners for the street jamboree.

Interest in the adult events was exceptional for both the Latino Dance Workshop and the Fair Trade Evening held on Wednesday, October 29. The latter event included guest speakers from Oxfam and the Body Shop; all enjoyed the lively and entertaining workshops. This was then followed by a buffet and Fair Trade wine. A Fair Trade stall selling a variety of unique produce proved to be very popular on the night with the highly motivated and inspired attendees.

The jamboree through Main Street on Saturday, November 1, was led by the horse drawn gypsy varda with the town crier, Rose Blackburn, and her canine assistant, 'Kojak'. They were followed by the children in their brightly coloured costumes and regalia. Cuban band, Los Yumas also took part, bringing their lively and energetic music to the streets of Pembroke.

The week was rounded off with another unique event for the adults run in association with SPAN, as Los Yumas performed this time at the Queen's Hall in Narberth on the Saturday night. A set of traditional and new Cuban music ensured it was a very lively night for all.

Chris Urack, adult and community officer and organiser of this year's event, said: "We have already had feedback from community groups who want to be a part of next year's One World Week and we would love to hear from similar groups or organisations who might also be interested."
