A PENDINE granddad has created his own fairytale ending as a result of reading stories to his grandchildren. The rewarding pastime won Dennis Hinchey, of Woodend, Pendine, £50 worth of book tokens. He explained in the following sentence of fewer than 25 words why he enjoyed reading. "I love reading to my grandchildren because their eyes widen and their faces glow when the stories unfold into beautiful fantasies," wrote Mr. Hinchey The "I love reading because..." competition was a joint competition organised by the South and West Wales library authorities, including Carmarthenshire, Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Swansea, funded by CYMAL, the Welsh Assembly body responsible for libraries. The competition was open to all members of the public and entrants were required to say in 25 words or less why they loved reading. Each library authority chose its own winner, who won £50 worth of book tokens. These winners now go forward to a regional final with a prize pot of book tokens worth £150. Regional library manager William Phillips said: "We had an excellent response to the competition in Carmarthenshire, with more than 150 entries from all areas of the county." Mr. Hinchey was presented with his prize by Carmarthenshire council executive board member for education, Ieuan Jones, at Carmarthen Library, which he uses regularly. Mr. Jones, a retired headmaster, said: "It's great to see a loving grandfather rewarded in this way, especially as his pastime of reading is introducing a whole new family to the wonderful world of books."
