After returning from a long and successful week at the Special Olympic National games held in Leicester last week, the team of 12 from Pembrokeshire which formed part of the 150 strong Welsh team at the games, were proud to show off their medals as they left the coach in Haverfordwest to a welcoming party of banners and flags.

This was the biggest multi-sport event in the world this year and the 12 athletes, 11 gymnasts and one swimmer who all have learning disability have been training hard to reach their peak for the competition which is held every four years.

Victoria Walters from Penally competed in three tough categories in the gymnastics. She won a fourth position on the beam, fifth on the floor and seventh on the volt.

Meanwhile, Richard Young, also from Penally, the only Pembrokeshire swimmer in the Welsh squad, won two gold medals in the swimming events, one for 50m freestyle, one for 50m backstroke, a bronze for the 4 x 50 medley relay and a fourth place in 100m freestyle.

The Pembrokeshire athletes combined won 15 gold, 12 silver and 16 bronze for Wales.
