Making music isn't the first association one makes with an oil refinery, but thanks to a donation from Valero's Pembroke refinery, pupils from Saundersfoot School are now all singing from the same song sheet, both at school and in the community.

After an initial grant from EMI Music towards the cost of a new keyboard, stand and bag, Valero paid the balance of over 80 per cent of the total cost.

With over 300 pupils, the school has found it difficult to access a keyboard or piano when it performs with other choirs or orchestras in the community, and it needed to replace a 20-year-old keyboard, which was very heavy.

Helen Lester, the headteacher at the school, said that the keyboard is used by both staff and pupils and that its high-quality sound is enhancing their performances.

She added: "We are so grateful for the generous support that Valero gives to Pembrokeshire schools. Saundersfoot School enjoys taking music out into the community and the new keyboard will allow us to perform in a wider range of venues. Our school choir, our orchestra, our recorder groups and a large number of solo instrumentalists will all benefit hugely from the flexibility that is now available to us."
