The communites of Hermon, Glogue and Llanfyrnach in north Pembrokeshire are celebrating the completion of their new community resource centre tomorrow (Saturday).
The new site is known as Canolfan Hermon and during the opening day celebrations visitors will be welcomed from 1 pm onwards to tour the new two-storey building. There will be a talk on the low carbon techniques used for air source heating, 9kw solar PV system, solar thermal hot water system, under floor heating and timber frame Warmcell insulation used for the building.
The chairman of the committee, Bill Davies, noted: "The community rallied together to purchase the old school site in 2008 through a community share offer and subsequently clinched the funding for the new low carbon centre"
He added: "We now have a sustainable community centre and during the opening event the 12 tenants and groups currently using the site will give taster sessions on the type of community courses and group activities that are currently available and the plans for new activities."
There will be a cutting of ribbon ceremony at 2 pm where Maureen George, the last headmistress of the old Hermon Community Primary School, will officially open the centre.
Following a full afternoon of activities for children and adults, there will be a chance for further enjoyment in the evening with a Grand Ball. Live music will be provided by the five-piece band Sound Awake. Tickets are £7.50 in advance or £9 at the door and are available at Canolfan Hermon. Additional information about the event and the ongoing activities can be found on http://www.canolfanhermon.org.uk">www.canolfanhermon.org.uk or by phoning the office on 01239 831968.
The volunteers on the committee of Canolfan Hermon wish to thank all the grant funders, staff, builders, suppliers and the local community for their tremendous support in enabling the community venture to realise the potential of providing rural community services. The site will now be marketing the 250 capacity hall with three conference rooms, kitchen and three available office rooms.
To date, several weddings and parties have been booked, with a string of charities using the site to fundraise for their causes.
Bill Davies concluded: "Canolfan Hermon is a great example of a community enterprise owned and run by local people, working together to sustain and develop rural activities and services."
