In the only division one match played on Saturday, Bonymaen brushed aside the challenge from the Otters to produce the shock result of the day. Not only did the visitors pile 32 points on Narberth, but rubbed the home team's noses in the dust by not conceding any points in reply. Both teams had expected to play in the second round of the WRU Konika Minolta Welsh Cup. However, Wrexham called off their cup tie at Bonymaen and Brynmawr also conceded their tie at Narberth, leaving both division one clubs high and dry without a fixture. Fortunately common sense prevailed, the clubs got together and decided to play the league fixture originally scheduled as a mid-week match on Wednesday, February 9. The move made sense for economic reasons as spectators and sponsors prefer a Saturday match to a mid-week match, but from the point of view of Narberth's challenge for promotion the outcome was a disaster. Bonymaen were up for it from the kick-off and the Otters simply did not perform. Narberth supporters were despondent after the match and were heard to mutter: "It was the worst display ever seen, and by a Narberth team" or "we never turned up." These comments had an element of truth, but they failed to give credit to the performance of the Bonymaen team who raised their game and had clearly been influenced by the recruitment of former Welsh international Richard Webster on to their coaching staff. It was a sign of things to come when Narberth captain Alan Phillips was yellow-carded after 10 minutes and with the Otters one player short, the visitors were awarded a penalty try after 17 minutes, apparently for collapsing a maul. The conversion attempt proved to be no problem for Bony outside-half Rob Richards. Four minutes later, Richards was on kicking duty again and his successful penalty extended the lead to 10 points. For the first half-an-hour of the match, Bonymaen attacked relentlessly, but the Otters did defend well, even if they were unable to mount any attacks. Attempts to score tries from scrums near the Narberth line were thwarted on nine occasions and the only other opportunity Bony had to increase the lead was with a penalty after 31 minutes, but Richards was off target. Trailing by 10 points at the interval and playing from their favoured town end, the Otters had every chance to get back into the game. Unfortunately, the home team suffered an immediate setback more or less straight from the kick-off when Bony outside-half Rob Richards chipped the ball ahead and hooker Darren Poland raced on to the ball to cross for an unconverted try. Although the Otters had more of the ball in the second half, they rarely threatened the Bonymaen line and midway through the half the visitors increased their lead with a try by lock Stuart Miller who was driven over the line from a lineout. Rob Richards added the conversion points and quickly followed up with a penalty. Ten minutes later, the final score of the match came when Bony winger Chris Batsford seized on a loose ball. The visitors had kicked ahead. Narberth winger Nick Jones went to gather the ball which bounced off his foot and then was deflected from the boot of Otters' captain Alan Phillips into the arms of Batsford. The speedy winger grasped the opportunity to run clear of the Narberth defenders from the 10-metre line to cross near the posts for a try converted by Richards. The closest that Narberth came to scoring was in injury time when outside-half Adrian Killa was brought down two yards from the line. Generally it was a below par performance by the Otters, but there were some exceptions to the general rule. As usual, flankers Gary Denver and Rob McCusker gave a hundred per cent in defence and attack and rugged centre Andrew Bowen had a number of strong runs. Nevertheless, it was a day that the Narberth players would prefer to forget and they will have to focus on the challenges which lie ahead. Although there is no league rugby tomorrow because of the rugby international in Cardiff between Wales and South Africa, there are two hard games coming up for the Narberth players. On Saturday, November 13, Narberth travel to Whitland in the local derby where the form book goes out of the window, but both teams will be desperate to win. Then, after another international break because of the New Zealand match on Saturday, November 20, the following week Narberth are home to division one leaders Maesteg. The Folly Farm Balcony Suite match sponsor was Folly Farm of Begelly and the Otters' Holt match sponsor was Dr. Stephen Allen, dental surgeon, of Haverfordwest. On this occasion, the sponsors decided not to nominate a man-of-the-match. Narberth fielded: Gareth James, Nick Jones, Neil Davies, Andrew Bowen, Andrew Jones (Marc Davies), Scott Penney (Sion Brace), Adrian Killa, Fifitapuku Falatau (Kevin Allen), Nathan Williams (Martin Bowen), Alan Phillips (Captain), David Ebsworth, Emori Katalau, Rob McCusker, Gary Denver and Gareth Bennett (Dafydd Bowen).
