MISS A. HUGHES

NARBERTH

As reported previously, the death occurred peacefully at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, on April 26, of Miss Anne Hughes, aged 82, of Williams Court, Narberth, formerly of Ryelands Lane, Kilgetty.

Anne suffered from Spinabifida, so never worked or married, but she was a strong and independent lady until she became ill, and was passionate about life. Although confined to a wheelchair from an early age, she always gave a warm welcome to visitors with a lovely smile and a wicked sense of humour.

Anne had suffered for the last four years with terminal cancer.

Among her main interests, she had a love of dogs and cats and would tell you she preferred to see them instead of people!

Daughter of the late Wynford and Hilda, she was beloved sister of John, and also leaves cousins, nieces and many friends too numerous to mention. Anne will be forever in their thoughts.

The funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Church, Begelly, on May 6, followed by interment at the church cemetery.

Officiating was Rev. Caroline Mansell, assisted by Rev. Martin Cox, while bearers were Mr. Graham Powell, Mr. Paul Raymond, Mr. Ron Powell and Mr. Rhys James.

If desired, donations in Anne’s memory may be made to Cancer Research UK, c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

Mr. (Captain) R. J. SANDEMAN-GAY

Richard Sandeman-Gay, aged 81, formerly of Bryn-Y-Mor, The Glen, Saundersfoot, suffered a heart attack in the early hours of May 8, at his home in Mount Pleasant, NSW, Australia. He was subsequently on life-support for four days and died at sunset on Thursday, May 11, in Wollongong Hospital.

The funeral and burial were held on May 19 and both services were conducted jointly by two Merchant Navy chaplains, who are revered family friends - one for the Mission to Seafarers and one for the Apostleship of the Sea; one Anglican, one Catholic.

Richard had claimed to be the only Welshman in the world who could not sing, but following a gift of singing lessons for his 79th birthday, he joined and was loved by the Arcadian Lamplighters Male Voice Choir where he sang bass.

At his funeral, the choir sang Eternal Father and his singing teacher, a beautiful young classically trained soprano, Carmel Leonard, sang the Welsh National Anthem. Carmel had had to learn Welsh in order to teach it for Richard and it was the first song he sang under her tutelage.

Richard is survived by his ever-loving sister, Catherine Mary Larne, and her family (now of Stevenage, Herts); his Australian and ever-loving wife, Elizabeth, his devoted and devastated children Marina, Jenelle, Evette and Brecon and their families - and many shipmates, seafaring and other friends.

If people wish to donate in his memory, the family would welcome contributions to Her Majesty’s Coastguard for the safety of life at sea.
