MR. G. GREASLEY
MANORBIER
As previously reported, Mr. Geoffrey Greasley, of Manorbier, died at his home after a long illness borne with great courage.
Geoff was born in Tenby Cottage Hospital on December 13, 1946, to Beatrice and Douglas Greasley. He grew up in Tenby and attended Neyland Technical College to study catering, progressing to two years at Highbury College, Portsmouth, where he won medals at Hotel Olympia.
He then moved to London, working in prestigious West End hotels, Royal Lancaster, The Piccadilly, ending up as one of the youngest sous chefs of his time at Grosvenor House. Here he met Lorna and they were married in 1971, returning to Tenby to run the Buckingham Hotel on the Esplanade in conjunction with Mrs. Greasley. They expanded to buildings either side and started the outside catering business Alfresco Catering.
In 1987, they moved as family to Castlemead, Manorbier, a village they had always loved. This gave him time and space to develop the catering side of things, doing weddings, and corporate functions across the three counties, including Royal events.
He was a much-loved father to Victoria, Emma and Alice and beloved Dandant to Freddie, Martha, Isabel, Jack and Genie, in whose company he delighted.
On February 22, St. James’ Church, Manorbier, was full to capacity to celebrate Geoff’s life where a delightful service was conducted by the Rev. Alex Grace, with very humorous eulogies from Robert Searles and Phil Thompson, both close personal friends.
Family left to mourn are Lorna (wife), daughters Victoria, Emma and Alice, husbands Will and Graham and grandchildren, sisters Corrine, Gwyneth, Bernice and nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.
Funeral arrangements were wonderfully carried out by Messrs. W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, to whom donations in lieu of flowers are to be made for Paul Sartori and Macmillan, who supported Geoff so well.
MR. A. G. THOMAS
SARDIS
A large number of family and friends recently gathered at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, to celebrate the life of Arthur George Thomas.
George, as he was known, passed away peacefully at Withybush Hospital on Thursday, January 19, aged 88, following a short illness, and was the second of three children of the late Leonard and Elsie Thomas.
Following his full-time education, his career began in the agricultural industry at Trewern and Treberth farms and later at Hean Castle Estate, for the late Lord Merthyr and his son Mr. Trevor Lewis.
Working in the forestry section, his duties included felling trees and working at the saw mill, where the timber would be transformed into various products. These would include pit props, fence posts and fencing and the finished products would be delivered by George in the estate’s lorry, to farms and homes all over Pembrokeshire. The pit props were transported to the then working collieries throughout Wales and the seasonal products of Christmas trees formed welcome deliveries in many parts of the country.
In 1991, along with his brother David, he received the Royal Agricultural Society’s Long Service Award to Agriculture. The award was presented by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales at the Royal Welsh Show.
George was to meet Miss Margaret Cousins, and following their courtship, were married at St. Issell’s Church, Saundersfoot, on February 2, 1955.
Their first child David was born at 7 Wells, Sardis, where they set up their temporary home with Margaret’s mother Nurse Cousins, Margaret’s brother Nygel and Uncle Bill.
They later moved just down the road to 3 New Buildings where they were to live together for the next 35 years, and where second child Lynne and third child Darron was born.
In his younger days, George was an enthusiastic dinghy sailor, and crewed in the late Ivor Hughes’s Jollyboat, taking part in regattas throughout the county in addition to his own club races at Saundersfoot with Margaret, brother-in-law Roger and several friends. A keen motorcycle enthusiast, owning several of his own, along with his brother David, brother-in-law Nygel and friend Brian ‘Titch’ Picton he would regularly attend race meetings at Silverstone, Aintree and Aberdare Park.
A member of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffalos, he was a regular attendee at their meetings at the RAOB club in Kilgetty.
On May 20, 1992, George was to suffer a tragically devastating blow just prior to his retirement, by the sudden death of his beloved wife Margaret.
George’s love of the outdoors continued at home. He was a keen gardener and was delighted when his effort was rewarded with a garden full of fresh produce, which he would willingly share amongst neighbours.
Upon his retirement, he became an active member of Sardis Parks and Gardens and earned praise for the manner in which he cleared the woodland brambles, and trimmed the hedges. George also enjoyed walking the fields around Sardis, taking in the magnificent scenery as the seasons changed and enjoyed watching the wildlife.
One of his favourite walks was from Wisemans Bridge to Saundersfoot, when he would stop and chat to passers-by. As George grew older and failing health intervened, his walks became less frequent but his love for Sardis and the countryside never faded.
George will be remembered as a true countryman, whose source of joy was the beautiful land around him and the life it sustained.
George was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed dearly by David and Rita (son and partner), Lynne and Andrew (daughter and son-in-law), Darron and Sandra (son and daughter-in-law), Sheryll, Lee, Jodie, Rachel and Tomos, Daniel, Hannah, Sophie and Jason, Jessica, Carl (grandchildren and partners), Barbara and Roger Thomas (sister and brother in law), David and Mary Thomas (brother and sister in law), Nygel and Denise Cousins (brother-in-law and sister-in-law). Along with great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces, too numerous to mention.
The funeral service took place on Thursday, February 2, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium Narberth. Officiating at the service was Rev Marianne Osborne. The bearers were David and Darron Thomas, Daniel Bedford and Neil Thomas.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made for Myeloma, c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, Funeral Directors, Zoar Chapel, Funeral Home, Llanteg, Narberth, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

MR. I. F. BARCLAY
(formerly of Manorbier)
After a sustained battle against cancer, Ian Fergusson Barclay died at his home in South Africa on March 2, aged 88.
Ian was born in Manorbier in 1928 where his parents Major Charles and Nesta Barclay lived before moving to St. Florence where they brought up their young family at Elm Grove. Ian had a sister, Anne Jewson, who died in 2013.
The Barclay family had lived in Pembrokeshire for several generations, both in Tenby and latterly Manorbier, where there are memorials to various family members.
He attended Radley College in Oxfordshire before doing his National Service in the Royal Armoured Corps. He then attended Cirencester Agricultural College where he developed his lifelong skills in farm management.
It was while at Cirencester in the late 1940s that he spotted a 1924 two-seater bull-nosed Morris Oxford in a hay barn which he bought for £10 and lovingly restored.
Then in 1952, aged 23 and accompanied by a friend, he set out on the 11,000 mile journey to Southern Rhodesia in the bull-nose. After many adventures and some colourful publicity in the home press, they arrived safely in Salisbury, where Ian secured employment with Raffingora Estates farming tobacco.
This marked the start of his career as a tobacco farmer and, in 1954, Ian took leave to return to St. Florence to marry Rosemary (Rosie) Dudley D’Arcy Anderson at St. James’ Church, Manorbier, on August 21.
On return to Rhodesia, they set-up D8 farm, hacked out of 1,253 acres of virgin bush and started to grow tobacco, maize and cotton, with a local labour force drawn from across various tribes. Ian built two houses and the tobacco barns himself.
By 1961, he had formed his own company and, as a farming business, D8 was providing on site employment, housing, clothing and food stuffs for over a thousand tribal family members. At its height, the business was highly successful and Ian was regarded as a father figure on his ranch-style farm.
Ian and Rosie had four sons, Charlie, David, Johnny and Robbie. Whilst on Rhodesian National Service in 1977, David was killed in action against government insurgents.
As national security deteriorated in post-independence Zimbabwe, Ian and Rosie decided to move to South Africa in the mid-1980s where they bought another farm ‘Ottos Bluff’ in Natal. Following retirement, they moved to Hilton and then Howick. Rosie died in 2012. Charlie and his son David remain living in South Africa, as does Johnny. Robbie lives and works in Northern Ireland.
Throughout their full life together, Ian and Rosie kept in touch with family and friends in the UK and visited Pembrokeshire when they could. They were a devoted couple who weathered life’s challenges with quiet determination, resilience and characteristic good humour.
Ian’s funeral will be on Saturday, March 11, in South Africa. UK donations may be made payable to St. James’ Church, Manorbier, and sent to: Rev. Alex Grace, St. Mary’s Rectory, Church Park, Tenby, SA70 7EE (all donations will be used towards church fabric and restoration).
