MR. R. M. Turner
Tenby
As previously reported, the death occurred on January 8 of Mr. Roger Maxwell Turner, of The Bells, Narberth Road, Tenby. He was 75.
A resident of Pembrokeshire for 36 years, Roger was well known as a local businessman, conservationist and car enthusiast.
Roger was born in Cardiff in 1941, the eldest of William and Winifred Turner’s three children. He attended Birchgrove Primary in 1945 and later Cardiff High School in 1952. At 16 he started an apprenticeship with the Royal Ordnance Factory, Llanishen, Cardiff. He later moved on to the Royal Ordnance Factory at Woolwich, which saw him working with Rolls Royce, de Havilland and on early versions of the rotary engine.
After finishing his apprenticeship, he moved back to Cardiff, working in Treforest. An opportunity arose to start his own engineering business, making high precision tools for plastic manufacturing and consumer electronics.
Whilst in Cardiff he also joined the Territorial Army for several years.
In 1957, he met Carole, who he married in 1963. Their first child, Samantha, was born in Cardiff, and shortly afterwards, the family moved to Church Village, where their second child Russell was born.
In the 1960s and 1970s Roger appeared on the BBC’s Tomorrows World and Wales Today programmes with early working versions of improved residential smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; designs subsequently copied around the world.
Roger continued to work at Treforest, setting up his long-term company, Augusta Golf Products Ltd. in 1970.
Like many south Wales families, early holidays were spent in south Pembrokeshire. A camper van was purchased in the late 1970s which enabled more frequent weekends away, staying at the Old Mill camp site in Saundersfoot. An opportunity came to move to Pembrokeshire and the family moved to Broadfield Hill in Saundersfoot.
A new business premises was sought and secured in Tenby at the Salterns Industrial Estate. Over time, the business continued to expand, to meet demand in the growing corporate promotional products market, both nationally and internationally.
Roger continued to develop his skills, not only in engineering to maintain numerous different machines - some of which he had made from scratch, but also in design, photography, printing, manufacturing and sales and marketing.
Cementing the family roots in Pembrokeshire, Roger and Carole had their third child, Kimberley, in 1986, and moved from Saundersfoot to Bells Corner, Tenby.
From an early age, Roger enjoyed being outdoors and was passionate about the countryside and nature.
Over the years Roger had several fishing boats in Saundersfoot Harbour. His interest in fishing developed into running coastal sightseeing trips aboard the cruiser ‘KT’ for summer visitors around Caldey Island and along the South Pembrokeshire coast.
Roger was a trustee of Wildlife Trust, West Wales from 2000 and the Wildlife Trust of South and West since its formation in 2002, becoming chairman in 2004 and, after being reappointed, remained in office until 2009.
Roger was chairman during the time Skokholm Island was purchased. He became a Skokholm Founder, assisting in the acquisition of the island and creating the Founders Book - a sturdy, engraved oak book bound with leather - which is kept at Lockley Lodge as a reminder of those who had made a significant financial contribution to the purchase.
Roger loved cars; repairing, building, touring and racing many different models over the years. He was a member of the South Wales Kit and Specialist Car Club; Austin 7 Club; MG Club; and Guild of Motor Endurance. He first toured Europe, with Carole, in an Isetta bubble car.
He raced throughout Europe; hill climbing at Etretat in Normandy, at the Mille Miglia, Italy and the London-Athens race, to name just a few. He raced across North Africa in the Atlas Sahara endurance race in 2004. Closer to home, he was a regular at Llandow for circuit races and at Llys y Fran for hill climbs.
Roger continued to race into his later years. He would support fellow club members by repairing or fabricating parts that were no longer available.
Roger never really retired and if anything seemed even busier in his later years.
He is survived by his wife Carole, his three children, his three grandchildren, Isabel, William and Austyn, and his brother and sister, Gerard and Maxine, and their families.
The funeral service was held at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on January 20.
Donations in memory of Roger may be made to the Dai Rees Foundation, c/o funeral directors Messrs. W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby.
