MRS. E. D. M. LITHERLAND TENBY

Elaine Dorothy Maud Litherland passed away peacefully at Belmont Nursing Home, Tenby, on Tuesday, august 23.

Elaine was born in Clevedon, Somerset, in August 1925, being one of three sisters, Joan the eldest and Bobby the youngest.

While working as a telephonist in Bristol, Elaine met and subsequently married Frank Orlando Litherland, of Tenby.

Frank Litherland’s father, John Orlando Litherland and his wife Florence, at the time, ran the popular public house known as the Lamb Inn, Tenby.

Frank and Elaine came to Tenby in the early ’50s to take over the running of the public house. They were a very popular couple and ran the Lamb Inn successfully for many years.

In time, Elaine and Frank were able to purchase the Woodlands Hotel in Tenby, where they went on to develop a very successful business, catering for guests for the Shearings coach company.

Elaine and Frank sold the Woodlands, and retired in 1976, after many successful years in the hotel trade, always providing first class facilities for their visitors.

Frank and Elaine were very hard working, good employers and known as a sincere and very sociable couple.

Frank was a popular and enthusiastic member and occasionally a producer for Tenby Players.

Elaine and Frank also ran a very discreet(!) and popular watering hole at the Woodlands Hotel, known to a select few and labelled ‘The Yellow Submarine’, a term used by the friendly and energetic ‘Tenby Harbour’ crew, over a period of years when happy times were enjoyed by all.

Elaine and Frank would always put on special functions at Christmas and New Year; they also organised trips abroad for the ‘Yellow Submarine’ patrons, Turkey, Spain and Italy being among the most memorable of trips.

Sadly, Frank passed away in 1985. However, Elaine was not to be daunted and, with the help of her family and friends, she retired to a bungalow in the Paddock, Penally, where she had many happy years, later purchasing an apartment in Tenby’s South Cliff Street, where she was also very content.

Elaine continued to live a full and active life among her local family and friends.

Elaine’s health failed during the past 18 months and she moved to Belmont Court Nursing Home in Tenby, where she kept her spirits high, never complaining and always grateful for the support of staff, family and friends.

Elaine was able to reach her 91st birthday in August of this year.

A wonderful lady, loved and respected by everyone who knew her, Elaine leaves to mourn her daughter Julia Paice, granddaughter Lucy Paice and her son-in-law Roger Paice; Andrew, Caroline, James and Mathew Fursse; Robert, Trish, Aidan, Laura, Hannah Fursse; Kath and Donald Litherland; John, Jenny, Richard, Sandra, Tracy, Chris, Haley and Cameron Harvey, Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada; long-standing friends Marion in the USA and Joan Hodges, Tenby.

Elaine’s sisters, Bobby and Joan, predeceased her, all of whom lived to a fine age, so characteristic of a bygone generation of hard-working, happy souls, who gave of their best to the community in which they lived.

Family and friends across the world in Canada, Australia and the USA , all will miss her dearly.

The public funeral service took place at St. Mary’s Church, Tenby, on Tuesday, and was followed by private cremation at Parc Gwyn, Narberth.

Donations in lieu of flowers, if so desired, for RNLI - Tenby Lifeboat, may be made c/o E. C. Thomas and Son, funeral directors, Zoar Chapel Funeral Home, Llanteg, who are conducting the funeral arrangements.
