Paul R. T. Phillips

Tenby

Paul Phillips passed away peacefully in Glangwili Hospital on February 27 after a short illness.

Paul was a native of Tenby, son of the Ven. Ivor Phillips and Eve (nee Tipton).

He was born in the Cawdor Hotel (now the Giltar) on The Esplanade, which belonged to his grandfather, Thomas Tipton.

Paul’s uncle, John Tipton, is a well-known Tenby figure.

Paul was married to Judy, whom he met at Leeds University and they have a daughter, Ruth, and a son, Mark, and five grandchildren, Josh, Lily, Ivy, Florence and Mia.

After the war, Paul moved with his parents to Monmouthshire and attended Newport High School, from where he went to Leeds University to read chemical engineering.

As a youth, he worked on the Caldey boat with Jerry Cummins, during holidays.

On leaving university, he joined Shell and worked for them all his life, retiring in 1999.

He and Judy enjoyed travelling and in retirement split their time between Tenby and Mallorca. Paul had many happy hours in Mallorca on his local fishing boat. As recently as early February, he enjoyed a holiday in South Africa.

The family would like to thank the staff of Steffan ward in Glangwili who were extremely kind and sympathetic, and made his last hours very comfortable. Mrs. D. Hammersley BEM

Tenby

St. Mary’s Church, Tenby, was full for the funeral on Monday of retired teacher and artist Mrs. Doreen Hammersley BEM, of Tenby.

Born in Kent in 1926, Doreen was the youngest of the five children of Gerald and Edith Wright. Her father died when she was six-months-old and the family returned to Tenby. They lived in Clareston Road, and spent a lot of time with their grandparents at Charles Batten jeweller, watchmaker and optician in White Lion Street.

She attended Greenhill County School, excelling academically and at sport. She was house captain of St. David’s, school sports captain, Victrix Ludorum for athletics and a prefect. At 15, she was the youngest person to achieve her full school certificate in art, obtaining honours in all divisions. Unfortunately, due to the war, she was unable to secure the financial sponsorship needed to take up her offer of a place at art college.

At just 17, she became a student teacher, with her first post at Penally School, teaching pupils as old as 14. Then as an uncertificated teacher she worked alongside her mother in Tenby for the next 10 years, particularly enjoying teaching the children to dance.

Having met Peter at school, they married in 1952 and Doreen took a break from work to bring up her three children.

In 1967, she went to Trinity College, Carmarthen, to complete her teaching certificate, specialising in maths and art.

She taught in Pennar and Saundersfoot, before returning to Tenby Junior School.

Doreen’s curriculum was governed by the weather, and she took the children out of the classroom at every opportunity.

In 1978, she gained her Bachelor of Education degree, studying whilst working full-time.

Predeceased by Peter in 1982, Doreen took early retirement and said it was the best decision she ever made.

In her 30s, she became captain of Tenby 4th Guides, particularly loving camping.

In 1973, she jointly led a Scout and Guide trip to Adelboden in Switzerland, and was still visiting there in 2009.

She was County Commissioner for Pembrokeshire, vice-president of Girl Guiding Cymru, and more recently chairperson of the Trefoil Guild.

At 21, she was an inaugural member of the Welsh Folk Dance Society, and in later years, she took up Scottish dancing, driving herself to Houghton as recently as last year.

Art had been her passion and she had been involved with many painting groups. She particularly loved portraits, and in 1964, had two of her studies critiqued in The Artist magazine.

Having displayed her work in many local exhibitions, she was thrilled to be asked to hold a one woman show in the Scout and Guide Hall a year ago.

She had been chairperson of Tenby Arts Club, and a trustee and loyal supporter of Tenby Museum.

For many years, Doreen was a faithful parishioner at St. Anne’s Church in New Hedges, having first attended when her mother was the organist there.

Doreen had been a Soroptimist for over 35 years, and was president in 1984.

She was thrilled to be awarded a British Empire Medal in 2014 and attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace last May.

For her, if something wasn’t fun, then it wasn’t worth doing, and she inspired so many people with her zest for life.

Doreen was predeceased by her siblings Joan, Thelma, Cyril and Gwyneth.

Left with wonderful memories of Doreen’s life are her children and their partners, Philip and Anne, Elaine and Rob, Neil and Fiona, grandchildren and partners, Victoria and Daz, David and Gemma, Gareth and Hayley, Simon and Hannah, Haydn, Darryll, Rhiannon and Megan, great-grandchildren Iestyn, Mili, Peggy Anne, Poppy and Archie, and many nieces and nephews.

Messrs. W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, carried out the funeral arrangements.
