MRS. J. C. EVANS

Pembroke

The family of Mrs. Joan Calvin Evans were sad to announce her recent death, having celebrated her 100th birthday three months ago.

Joan grew up in Narberth, went to school in Tenby, started her working life in the bank, and then joined the Air Ministry during the war.

With her first husband she then ran Tracy’s Ironmongers in Pembroke Dock for some years. She then moved to Bristol and married her second husband, Mr. Peter Evans, brother to Mr. Reg Evans, Barclays Bank manager, of Pembroke, and husband of her elder sister Peggy. The two families first become associated when their parents were bank managers in Narberth before the war.

Joan spent many years in Bristol, both with Pete and later as a widow, and was often seen driving around in her beloved Mini, right up until the age of 97. She then moved back to Pembroke, where she ran her own home with her usual cheerfulness and determination.

A strong character and personality, for which she will always be remembered, Joan was greatly liked and respected. For more than 70 years she was involved in the care and guidance of all generations of the growing family in her role as Auntie Joan.

Joan always kept in touch with all of her large and widespread family, and with her many friends. She will be remembered with great affection by all.

The funeral takes place today (Friday) with a service at the crematorium at 3.15 pm. Officiating will be Rev. David Calvin Thomas, Joan’s nephew, while principal mourners will be nephews and nieces David and Fiona, Paul and Beryl, Gillian and Phil, Penny, Eden and Gaynor.

Steve was a talented footballer and was a great striker, having a good eye for the ball and reading a pass beforehand. He played for Pennar Robins, Monkton Swifts and many games for the county and was chosen by Swansea City’s Cygnets, winning numerous trophies and making many friends.

On leaving school, Steve moved to Caerphilly to work with an upholstery furniture manufacturer. He returned to Pembroke Dock, working as a scaffolder’s mate at Chevron Refinery, before moving on to work for Svitzer.
