MRS. N. S. GILBERT
BRISTOL
(formerly of Sardis)
The death occurred on May 31, of Mrs. Nancy Sybil Gilbert (nee Crumpton), affectionately known as 'Nan', who made her home in Bristol, though her family roots were firmly with the Johns of Sardis and to where she regularly returned on holiday with her husband and latterly her daughter Sherry and her family.
Predeceased by her husband Daniel (Dan), she had shared a full and enjoyable life with him, running their shoe shop in Keynsham for many years before retirement. Throughout her life she had always focused on her family and their families, taking pleasure from the new younger generation.
Principal mourners were her children, John (Vancouver), who unfortunately could not attend, but sent a touching message to the family, reflecting on his mother's life and the regular transatlantic telephone conversations, Sheridan (Sherry - Bristol), David (Vancouver) and Madeline (Bournemouth) and their families.
Nan's husband being the eldest son of Thomas and Florence Gilbert (Wooden), who had 12 children, resulted in Nan's close family being joined by the wider family tree, which saw 39 relatives coming together, many for the first time for many years and sharing fond childhood memories of past times and holidays in 'Granny Gilbert's' cottage on Holborn Corner, Wooden.
The service at Westerleigh Crematorium, near Bristol, was conducted to Nan's wishes, containing both traditional hymns and lighter contemporary music, selected and celebrating her life, all remembering her broad, warm smile, below curly auburn locks of a mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
