Mr. I. G. Williams

New Hedges

The funeral took place at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on Wednesday, May 6, of Mr. Ivor Gwyn Williams, of Lodge Cottage, Lodge Farm, New Hedges, who passed away at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, on April 28, aged 73.

Gwyn is survived by his wife Sonia, daughter Alysson and grandchildren Aarron and Reuben.

Ivor Gwyn Williams was born at Lodge Farm on December 1, 1935, to Harry and Violet Williams. Gwyn had two older brothers, Gryff, who died very prematurely in 1956, and Colwyn, a former Mayor of Tenby in the late '70s.

On leaving school, Gwyn worked on the farm and helped on the well-established milk round for his Uncle Vincent and Mother Vi.

During the early '50s, Gwyn became an active member of Tenby YFC and was its chairman during the 1958-59 season.

With his uncle Tudor and Vincent and Mother Vi so very successful in the horse world, it wasn't long before Gwyn too got involved with them in hunting, point to pointing and showing and between them had many successes.

Gwyn started his pointing in the early '50s and continued through until the early '70s riding with the greats of that period, Fred Mathias, Jack Phelps, Howard Lewis, Howard Scourfield, the Llewellins, Birt, Dick, John and Derrick among many others.

Included in many of the horses he rode were Cressing and Bushy Path, both trained at home.

It was September 28, 1963, that Gwyn and Sonia were married at St. Mary's Church, Cardigan, with a reception at the Black Lion Hotel. Gwyn's best man was Fred Mathias and among the ushers were John Williams, of Red Down, and David Williams, of Tarr.

After honeymooning in Scotland, they made their first home at Twy Cross, New Hedges, before moving to West Holloway, where they spent 18 years.

Following the deaths of Uncle Vincent in 1981 and Mother Vi in 1982, Gwyn and Sonia moved to The Lodge, where they lived until their retirement.

Throughout his life, Gwyn was a supporter of Tenby Hunt Week, particularly when his mother was secretary for over 25 years and also when Sonia took over. They have so many happy memories of Hunt Balls, Covert and Wire, whist drives, the Hunt Week meets, especially the Saturday meet in Tudor Square.

After hanging up his racing boots, Gwyn continued his involvement with the game by assisting Alysson in training Hampton Boy, who gave them all so much heartache, and Bancyfelin Boy.

Gwyn was very proud of the fact that he was once one of the most senior members of the South Pembs. Point to Point committee and had been judge at the Easter Monday Races for many years. Since the retirement of John Parry-Keen, who won the members on Bancyfelin Boy for Alysson, he had the pleasure of judging the finish.

Among his other interests were his membership of the Conservative Club and lifeboat committees, his passion for darts, which he played with great success, the odd pint, while he had been a bingo caller for many years.

In his latter years, he had enjoyed the company of his two grandsons, Aaron and Reuben, who he adored and both of whom had become involved with helping out on Easter Monday.

So with all his associations with so many activities, 'Gwyn the Lodge' will be remembered for being a very special character and will be greatly missed.
