MR. R. MORRIS

SCOTLAND

(formerly of Tenby

and Saundersfoot)

The death occurred at Dundee Hospital in Scotland, on January 6, of former Tenby schoolboy Ronald Morris, aged 71. He was born in Saundersfoot, the second child in a family of five, all of whom attended Greenhill School. The family moved to Tenby in 1948 and lived in a terrace of former coastguard houses opposite Church Park.

Ronald joined the Royal Navy as an engineering apprentice in 1954 following a great-grandfather who was a marine engineer in the 1880s. After initial training in Plymouth, he completed his apprenticeships at HMS Condor in Arbroath and joined the Fleet Air Arm as an aircraft engineer. There he met his future wife Helen. They were married in 1958 and celebrated their Golden Wedding in December last year.

Naval life suited Ronald and he proved to be a resourceful engineer. He was promoted Chief Petty Officer in 1961 and during his career served at several RNAS establishments in Britain together with sea time aboad HMS Eagle and a posting to Singapore. He completed his service as an instructor at HMS Thunderer in Plymouth and left the Navy in 1970. Contraction of our defence forces had already begun.

Civilian life commenced in Scotland and Ronald moved into agricultural engineering, acquiring experience in farm machinery and buildings. This background enabled him to establish his own business in Friockheim, near Arbroath, fabricating and erecting steel portal frames. Unfortunately the 1980s recession forced closure of the business and Ronald joined an American company supplying specialised equipment to the developing oil industry. He soon absorbed this new technology and before long had set up and managed a factory making filtration screens for cleaning the cutting mud used for oil drilling. Travel to oil fairs became obligatory together with extensive Europen marketing successfully seeking new uses for the product.

Ronald's main leisure interest was golf and he had a gifted pupil in his youngest grandson Jack. Together they played many courses, including visits to Pembrokeshire which combined golf with the rediscovery of former boyhood haunts.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, two children and four grandchildren. His youngest brother Cyril, a former navy pilot, retires soon to Saundersfoot and his sister and elder brother continue to visit Tenby as opportunities permit.

The funeral took place in Friockheim on January 13.
