MRS. C. H. BLEINES
TENBY
As previously reported, the death occurred peacefully on Saturday, January 17, of Mrs. Catherine Helen (Nell) Bleines, aged 85, at Park House Court, Tenby, where she had been very kindly cared for during the previous three months.
She leaves her husband, Norman, son David, daughter Catherine and six dearly loved grandchildren. Her daughter Eleanor sadly died in 1982.
Helen was born in New Tredegar, Monmouthshire, and moved to Walmer House in Deer Park, Tenby, when she was 10. She enjoyed her school days at Greenhill Grammar School and spent three very happy years studying Botany and Agriculture at Aberystwyth University. During the summer holidays she picked fruit in Kent and recalled returning to Tenby by train laden with plums for her family - a welcome treat in wartime Britain.
At this time she became and remained an enthusiastic and accomplished letter writer and diarist, thus leaving an evocative first-hand account of her life.
After graduating, Helen became a teacher in Buckinghamshire, where she met her future husband, fellow teacher, Norman Bleines. They made their first home in a small cottage in Chalfont St. Giles, before settling permanently in Walmer House, Tenby, in 1951.
For many years, Helen devoted herself to her children and to caring for her aging parents and her aunt. During the evenings her fingers were always busy producing smocked baby clothes and Fair Isle and Aran jerseys or skilfully icing a birthday cake.
In 1965, a new phase in Helen's life began when she was asked to undertake a week's supply teaching. The 'week' extended to 17 years as a primary school teacher and eventually deputy head. Helen's enthusiasm and skills at working with children have left their impact on a generation of Tenby children who fondly recall her knack of getting on the level of each child, of firing their imaginations and above all her kind and sympathetic manner.
After Helen returned to teaching, she and Norman took to travelling, both in Britain and abroad. This including trips to Australia and the United States where they were able to meet up with many members of Norman's large extended family.
Helen's kindness, patience, wisdom, sense of fun will be remembered for many years to come by her family, her friends, her school pupils and many others whom her life touched.
Over the last few years, Helen's husband Norman took over the running of the household with impressive efficiency, due, he says, to having learnt by observing his wife. He also looked after Helen devotedly, thereby enabling her to remain in the comfort of her own home long after many would have thought possible.
A private funeral has been arranged with family mourners only and family flowers only, by request.
Donations in memory, if so wished, may be sent by cheque to the RNLI, Tenby, or to the Wildlife Trust of South West Wales, c/o Messrs. W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby.
