Mr. B. Deeley

Saundersfoot

A large gathering of family and friends attended a celebration for the life of Mr. Brian Deeley, of Saundersfoot, at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth, on Thursday, December 14.

Brian, who was 82, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, December 5, following a courageous battle against illness.

The crematorium was filled as mourners gathered to pay tribute to a man who was loved and respected by all who came to know him.

Born in The Midlands, Brian had gifts of hand and mind. He qualified as a painter and decorator and set-up his own business. In his youth, he was also an accomplished sportsman, a keen cyclist, squash player, runner and walker, as well as amateur wrestler.

He did his National Service in the Army serving in Cyprus and Northern Ireland.

Brian first came to Pembrokeshire in the mid-1960s when he brought his family on holiday to Trevayne, New Hedges. This was to become a regular holiday venue for the Deeleys.

Brian took up bowls and became a competitive player, eventually representing Warwickshire.

Through bowls, Brian met his partner of 25 years, Ann Lewis. Brian spent more and more time visiting, eventually making his home with Ann in Saundersfoot.

The home Brian and Ann made together was always been a place of love, joy, friendship and welcome.

Brian and Ann both love gardening and together they have been prize-winners in Saundersfoot in Bloom.

A life member of Saundersfoot Bowling Club, where Ann is president, Brian worked tirelessly for the club over many years and until illness prevented him could be seen most mornings at the green gardening or performing much needed work on the green and clubhouse.

He was also a qualified coach, helping new and prospective members to learn the game of bowls and had been a long-time member of the committee, bar manager and club delegate to the Pembroke Men’s County Bowling Association.

More recently, Brian sponsored a trophy for the best kept garden around the green and it was a very happy day when the family attended the prize-giving in the summer.

Brian had an enormous number of friends in The Midlands and in Saundersfoot and will be sadly missed by them all.

Brian is survived by Ann and family, and sons Alan and Tim and their families.

The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Canon Michael Butler, a close family friend. Hymns were Amazing Grace and O Lord My God. A poem, God’s Garden, was read by Joanne and Elaine. Bearers were Alan and Tim, Alex, Dai, Korey and Jordan. A tribute to Brian was given at Wiseman’s Bridge Inn by longstanding friend Graham Watson.

There were family flowers only, with donations in memory of Brian, if desired for the Paul Sartori Foundation, c/o Messrs. W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons Ltd., The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, who carried out the funeral arrangements.

MRS. S. HUGHES

ST. FLORENCE

The funeral of Sinéad Hughes, of White Gables, St. Florence, took place on Monday, December 18, at Holyrood and St. Teilo’s Catholic Church in Tenby, followed by interment at St. Florence Parish Church. The service was conducted by Father Michael Fewell.

Sinéad had recently celebrated her 88th birthday and is survived by her husband Raymond; her son Richard and daughter-in-law Valerie; her daughter Margaret, son-in-law Eddi and grandchildren Harry, Laura and Elsa; her daughter Jane; her son Raymond, daughter-in-law Sandy and grandchildren Rhys, Bethan, Iwan and Rhian; her brothers James and Billy; her brother-in-law Des and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Bearers at the funeral were Richard, Raymond, Eddi, Rhys, Harry and Iwan. The eulogy was read by Iwan, Harry and Laura. Many family members travelled from Ireland to attend the funeral.

Sinéad was born in Ahalahana, Moyvane, near Listowel in the county of Kerry in Ireland. After leaving school, she moved to Dublin to work for the Civil Service in the Land Commission. During this time, she lived with her Auntie Jane, of whom she was very fond.

Whilst visiting her sister Mary Ellen Pullin in Tenby, she met her future husband, Raymond, at a dance at the De Valence Pavilion.

They married in 1960, lived in Tenby for a short time and then moved to St. Florence, where they built their own house, White Gables.

Sinéad and Raymond raised four children here and also turned White Gables into a successful guest house, with many visitors returning year after year to enjoy Sinéad’s excellent cooking.

Sinéad loved to cook and bake for her family and after her children had grown up, moved away and some had children of their own, she enjoyed their many visits over the years, with her popular lemon cake an essential element of these holidays!

She was also a prolific knitter and enjoyed sewing and making clothes for herself and her family. She was a keen card player, with 110 being the most popular game played by all the family.

Sinéad was an active member of the parish of Holyrood and St. Teilo’s for many years.

She was a member of the church choir; she organised sherry parties to raise funds for the church, despite being teetotal herself, and ran the grocery stall with friends from the parish at the summer and Christmas bazaars, with her grocery hamper raffle prizes becoming a legendary part of proceedings.

Sinéad endured ill-health at many stages of her life. She was born tiny two months premature in 1929 and was given the last rites as she was not expected to survive. She suffered from mental health issues and also survived cancer twice.

Throughout these trying times, her strong character saw her through; she remained cheerful and positive and her faith was a great comfort to her. She made several pilgrimages during her life, including to Knock and to Lourdes.

Sinéad remained at White Gables until her last illness, which saw her admitted to Withybush Hospital in late September. She died there peacefully on Tuesday, December 5, with her husband Raymond and daughter Jane at her side.

All who came into contact with her commented on what a lovely lady she was. Sinéad will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Donations in memory of Sinéad for Alzheimer’s Society or Cancer Research UK may be sent to W. and M. J. Rossiter and Sons, The Old Rectory, The Norton, Tenby, who conducted the funeral arrangements with dignity and sensitivity.
