REVEREND

DAVID JOHN JOSEPH

MIDDLETON ON SEA

(formerly of Tenby)

Many Tenby residents and particularly members of St. Johns United Reformed Church will be saddened to hear of the recent death, at the age of 67, of Revd John Joseph. Before coming to St. Johns with his wife, Jenny, and young daughter, Hannah, John had been Minister at Trinity URC in Sutton, Surrey, and an Interim Moderator there.

Born and brought up at Porth in the Rhondda, he greatly loved the coastline of Pembrokeshire and its friendly residents. John was an enthusiastic lover of the vocal delights of male choirs and built up close relationships with both Tenby and Pembroke Male Choirs. He served on Tenby Town Council, was Mayor’s Chaplain, Chair of Governors at Tenby Junior School, a volunteer at the Gateway Club and a member of Tenby Rotary Club.

The family left Tenby 19 years ago and John took over the leadership of Redhill URC in Surrey. Soon after arriving in Redhill, John and Jenny’s son, David, was born and four years after David, Sarah came along. John loved the bustle and pace of life in a busy county like Surrey and thoroughly immersed himself in the communities of Redhill and Reigate. One of his favourite pastimes was spending a few hours at Gatwick Airport, people watching, enjoying all the comings and goings and, of course, consuming vast quantities of coffee!

In May 2015 he conducted Hannah’s marriage to Ed back at Trinity in Sutton. Although he was already in failing health the ceremony and the entire day ran perfectly and John was magnificent.

Following further medical intervention and the diagnosis of dementia, John retired from the Ministry in April 2016 and the family (minus Hannah and Ed, now living near Swansea) moved to Middleton on Sea, in West Sussex. Jenny and the children cared brilliantly for John until very recently, but in late May he entered a specialist residential home. John died on Wednesday, June 28, surrounded by his loving family. He fought a brave fight but is now at peace and at home with his Lord.

At his funeral, which will take place at Redhill URC on Tuesday, July 18, one of John’s favourite choral pieces will be heard, when a recording of Take Me Home, sung by Pembroke Male Choir, will be played.
