Cancer Research UK Cymru will be holding a special 'Christmas Fancy Dress Family Fun Run' at Oakwood Leisure Park on Sunday, November 2, starting at 11 am.

Taking part and helping to organise the day is 45-year-old Jacqueline Meek, of Penblewin, Narberth, who has run in numerous events to raise money for the cause, including the New York Marathon, the London Triathlon and more recently the Bupa Great North Run where she raised the great sum of £300.

Jackie was diagnosed with an inactive brain tumour in 1998, and underwent a successful operation at Morriston Hospital, but around the same time, the death of a close friend from a brain tumour led her into a quest to do all she could for cancer research.

"After 40 years of no illness, the shock of being diagnosed with a brain tumour changed my life and it made me realise how important research into cancer is," said Jackie.

"I am delighted to be involved locally with Cancer Research UK by taking part in this fun run and encouraging as many of my friends to get involved as possible.

"Hopefully the Christmas fun run will bring the community together and help raise money in Wales for such a worthy cause," she continued.

The event is a three-mile run, walk, jog or stroll around the picturesque park and everyone is welcome to take part, in fancy dress or not.

Anyone taking part will also receive gifts, with prizes up for grabs for the best fancy dress costumes.

"There will be goody bags for all that take part and prizes for best dressed male, female, child and team. I've been donated a weekend three-night break for up to four people by a local businessman, for the person who raises the most money," explained Jackie.

She also acknowledged the support of everyone involved in the event.

"Many thanks to all the businesses local and in Haverfordwest, for donating the brilliant prizes and to Alderwicks and Prince's Gate for kindly donating bottles of water.

"As usual the support I receive is tremendous and we are also grateful to Paddy McNamara, of Oakwood Leisure Park, for allowing this fun family event to take place. We hope that everybody will come along to support the cause, fancy dress is optional, but would be well received."

All participants are required to register prior to the event and to raise a minimum of £35.

Registration forms are available from the Cancer Research UK Cymru Area Office, Cardiff, by telephoning Linda Strange on 02920 224386; Jackie Meek on 07765 340422; Landsker Stores, Narberth; or by collecting one from Oakwood Leisure Park.
