Last Sunday, Oakwood Park hosted the Cancer Research UK Christmas Fun Run for West Wales.

Over 60 people, including some in fancy dress, braved the wind to finish the three-mile course by running, jogging or walking and raising over £4,000 in the process.

Proceeds from the run will go to West Wales Cancer Research Units, including the unit at Withybush Hospital.

Linda Strange, of Cancer Research UK, said: "It was a fantastic day, with a large amount of money being raised for Cancer Research UK.

"A heartfelt thanks goes to Jackie Meek, without whose help and enthusiasm this event would never have taken place, and thank you to Oakwood for providing us with a unique venue," she continued.

"The turnout was tremendous for a wet and windy November day, so thank you to everyone who took part and the St. John Ambulance Brigade who were on hand, but thankfully were not needed."

Fund-raiser Jackie also praised the participants and Oakwood organisers.

"A big thanks to all the people who made the effort to help raise the money in such bad weather conditions," she said.

"Thanks also to Oakwood marketing manager Zoe Snell, who has asked me to make the fun run an annual event after the success of the day and raising £4,000, bringing our total up to £10,000 since 2001.

"The prizes of hampers, chocolates, bubbly and a turkey were also much appreciated, so thanks to Fred Hughes Butchers and Spar, of Haverfordwest, and Landsker Newsagents, Spar and Costcutter, of Narberth, for their kind contributions.

"We hope to find out by the end of the month, the person who has raised the most money, as they will win the prize of a three-night break for four people," added Jackie.
